Hi All,

We have a fairly senior pig (around 5) who had an aggressive tumour on his hip removed a few months ago (wound completely healed and no sign oftumour returning), this involved him being put under general anaesthetic and as you can imagine he was sore for a while as it was quite the wound!

A week or so later we noticed he had a wet bottom and was hunching up and squeaking with some red staining on the fleece in his sleeping area. We took him to the vet who thought it was unlikely he had a UTI because he was already on antibiotics following his Op but he was prescribed Septrim and Metacam anyway to be on the safe side. The red urine disappeared and he has only squeaked in pain occasionally since. The vet also considered bladder stones as there was something indicative in his urine but she couldn't feel any in his bladder and she thought it would be too coincidental that he'd only be showing symptoms of stones since having an operation on something unrelated.

Forward to the present and he still only squeaks occasionally but his bottom is persistently wet and seems to be getting worse (no red urine). He now also seems to have lost muscle mass around his hips and is quite often bunny hopping slowly around. We have considered that he might be getting arthritic with his age and have started supplementing him with the Oxbow joint support hay biscuits.

His problems only started after his operation and we were expecting him to have fully recovered by now - has anyone had a similar experience?

I think we're going to have to take him back to the vet for more poking and prodding.

I agree with Merab he needs to go back to the vet, he should not have a wet bottom all the time. The vet really should know what's going on if your not sure with your vet. Go & get a second opinion.

My 7 year old boar lost muscle mass around the hips and hopped after he had been sitting for a while, if he moved for a while he loosened up a bit. He had arthiritis, the vet would push both his back feet up whilst he was lifted up and one leg was way more stiff to push up than the other.

I also gave the joint support tablets, i dont know if they helped or not, but the metacam painkiller really did help him.

Thanks all, he's got an appointment next week. Hopefully he'll be more comfortable soon.
