Hi, I posted a while back about my boy with sensitive skin but got no replies so thought I would try again.

Bolvar got mites about 4 months ago. He was treated and is clean but seems to have an issue

The back of his neck/ higher back area seems to be over sensitised after this incident. I check him every day and have treated him with cream etc but once every weekish or so he seems to have a scratting fit an causes a new wound in that area.

I used a sock to clear up the initial wounds and every time he heals it just seems he gets a scratch and re opens the problem area despite all my precautions. I have even had his whole neck area clear but still he has a good scratch and hurts it again.
I love my lil guy an otherwise he is a sweet happy piggie but when he gets in one of his scrattin moods he makes a real mess :(

What treatments has he had and when? Mites needs to be treated with either ivermectin spot on or injections for a total of 3 treatments evey 10-14 days,

Sounds like the original treatment was not effective and may need to be repeated.....with full dinsinfection of hay/habitat/other guineas etc to prevent re-infection

Which treatment was used? Were the mites diagnosed and treated by a vet? Has a skin scrape been taken? Reinfestation within 4 months is not unusual if the source has not been dealt with, as Pebble has already advised a complete disinfection of his environment is also needed in view of his scratching.

Have you been bathing him since this happened? Any other products you have used? Apart from the scratching causing wounds what is the general condition of his coat?

I have Guido, who came into the rescue with an overwhelming infestation. He now needs to wear a protective jacket to prevent him scratching open his back time and time again; Each time he does he triggers a seizure due, it's believed, to the raw nerve endings causing so much pain that his body goes into convulsions.

Though very few pigs are affected to this degree, I would recommend persevering to prevent him developing a more severe reaction than he currently has.

Sorry for the necro, been tied up in childrens drama.

Just wanted to let you all know that Bolvar has finally gotten over his sensitive skin and has a good half a cm of ginger hair over his sore patch.

His coat since my initial mite treatment has been great, health etc perfect. My boys have been very happy lil boys hence the confusion over Bolvs scratting. I try not to bathe them too much but keep a close eye on their skin, teeth and nails and the one single problem that was present was the one sore patch that has thankfully started to clear up now.
