Hi everyone, I just joined!

I recently adopted two guinea pigs from my neighbors, because they were moving and didn't want them anymore. They hadn't been taking care of them either. The pigs pretty much ate only grass and were outside in the rain and sun, and my neighbors always were forgetting to give them water, I kept reminding them to take care of them, so they just gave them to me.

Anyway, the two pigs have been living together all summer and I assume for as long as my neighbors had them, so I assumed they were the same sex... and I have them living together now, because they are good friends. But I ran into my neighbor again and asked him to be sure and he said one is a male and one is a female. I tried to look to find out myself, and I really can't tell, it seems they look slightly different. So I've been checking pictures in my cavy books and on the internet and I still can't tell.

I'm going to take them to the vet and ask her, but in the meantime should I separate them just to be sure? They are such good friends and they've been through so much together. The one they say is a female hasn't gotten pregnant all summer, and I haven't seen them trying to mate or anything..

Anyway, I just need advice, Thanks

Nicole

If they've been together all their lives they're probably both the same - however, saying that, they could be young and the owners could be really lucky?

Could you get a photo of their bits? I know that would be hard seeing as you only just got them and they're probably scared but maybe you could? Not sure if you should seperate them - in one mind I say yes, if one is a male and one is a female you don't want to increase risk even more of the chance of your female getting pregnant, however, if they are both actually males and you split them they could be hard to rebond.

Where do you live? There might be someone on here near you who would be willing to check O0

Goodness me! Well done to you for taking these piggies on.

I would think that if these pigs are a male and female couple, that either one or both of them have been neutered. It's unthinkable that the female wouldn't be pregnant by now otherwise. Did your neighbours ever have baby piggies? Or mention that one had been neutered? Unless they might have been mis-sexed after all.

I don't really have any more thoughts or advice, I'm sorry! Jane has made some good points. Maybe another experienced piggy person will chip in!

Oh, and welcome to the forum! ;D

Thanks!

No my neighbor said they had not been neutered/spayed. As far as I know there haven't been babies. I figured the pet store just told him wrong, and they were the same sex, but I am a little worried. And it takes like two weeks at least to get an appointment with my vet, although I guess I could try a different vet.

I don't have a digital camera, so posting a picture could be hard. Oh and I live in Fairbanks, Alaska!

Wow! Alaska! ;D I'm in Scotland!

Maybe you're best to seperate them for the time being - is there any way you can do it so that they're still in the same cage/hutch? I have 2 boys who fight but enjoy each other's company and they live this way.

The only thing I can suggest is gently pressing on either side of the piggie's genitals to see if a little willy pops out! I'm not sure how to sex girls, only that they have 'Y' shaped bits?

Sorry for being useless! :D

Try Guinea Lynx sexing guinea pigs, I tried to do a link and it linked to a fruit & veg page ;D :embarassed: try just typing it in . . .

If they have been together all summer without mishap, I would be inclined to leave them together. She definately would have fallen pregnant in all that time unless they are both the same sex or one is infertile, which does happen occasionally. If you separate them to then find out they are males, rebonding them will be very difficult and they may end up living apart :-\
