Hello! We had a surprise pregnancy and mum had a lovely baby boy not quite 2 weeks ago.

Baby is now 225g at day 12 so with the 250g sexual maturity rule I need to look at separating quite early! I have noticed if he is away from mum he makes ALOT of noise even if she is relatively close by. I suppose I want to know, once separated are they best kept near to each other, or will that just cause a lot of frustration and pining at not being able to reach for one another?

For context I have 2 other girls, and baby is my only boy so he will be alone, but neighbouring. Plan to get him the chop when he’s old enough and he will then join them.

Advice and thoughts welcomed. I’m concerned because he’s so young!

I would place him next to your other piggies in a very secure cage so he cannot get back in with Mum/other ladies. There will be some separation upset for a few days then he will settle down

after fours months you will be able to get him neutered 😊 and then after a six weeks wait he can go back with his family

Oh wow! That’s early! Can I ask how much he weighed at birth?

My boy was 110g at 3 days old and he’s started eating well! Xx

I agree with @Bill & Ted - he definitely needs to be next to the other piggies in a very secure escape-proof cage. He will need the constant side by side interaction until he is old enough to be neutered and then six weeks post op safe.

Thank you for all your responses. The deed has been done this morning, it’s all very dramatic at the moment, although mum really is not bothered 😂

I assume weaning wise it’s all ok. He’s eating well and using the water bottle so I can’t really see any issues but as it’s still quite early, should I be supplementing with anything? He’s already got alfalfa hay (as has mum!)

Sorry @PiggyPoo i didn’t weigh at birth so can’t make a comparison. I gathered they varied a lot weight wise anyway and I am quite anxious by nature so as he seemed to be doing well I didn’t start weighing until 7 days where he was 152g 😊

Thank you all 😊

He sounds like he will be absolutely fine, well apart from missing his Mum. Don’t worry he’ll be fine side by side x
