So my vet has prescribed Septrin suspension for our guinea's URI. I got the first weeks supply from the vets (guinea is getting better slowly) but they have no more and so have given me a prescription to go to a pharmacy to get another weeks supply..but all the pharmacies I called don't have it. My main Boots in Bristol say they can get a generic equivalent (co-trimoxazole) tomorrow ..maybe.
Has anyone else experienced this? I used Septrin several times years ago and it was easily available. The trouble with the 'generic equivalent' is the pharmacist at Boots said the prescription has to actually say co-trimoxazole on it..i.e. not Septrin and I'm not sure if the vet will do this.
Thanks

Sulfatrim is the adult dose of the same drug, it doesn’t taste as nice though. It is also twice the strength. So 0.25ml of sulfatrim is like 0.5ml of septrin

I had problems getting Septrin earlier this year and had to get the generic equivalent. It is exactly the same drug just not branded. The vet should alter the prescription for you as it's not your fault! It tastes nicer than the sulfatrim too so piggies like it. The doses are not equivalent though as sulfatrim is stronger than septrin/cotrimoxazole so make sure the vet recalculates the dose if you do get sulfatrim instead
