Septrin Dose? Experiences please...

Hi all,
You may know George is on co-trimoxazole (Septrin) for his UTI as Baytril barely touched it. My rainbow girl was on Septrin for weeks and weeks with no ill effects and it eventually cleared her UTI. George has had a lower dose but then his weight was on the way down so vet might have taken that into consideration. Just as well as his guts were all over the place but, touch wood, he seems to actually be getting his appetite back a bit on Fibreplex/glucosamine/poop soup/Recovery cocktail (stirred, not shaken...)
Anyway, my vet uses the Adult suspension (80mg/400mg per 5ml) and George (now about 940 g) gets 0.2ml twice a day. My girl got 0.3ml but she was 1.2kg. I know pigs get it for other things too like URI but I don't know whether the site of infection would make a difference.

I'm interested to know what you've been prescribed in the past and how it's been for your pig. Also whether you've had the adult suspension because I think there's also a pediatric one. The theory of upping a dose when an infection is resistant (which it kind of is) is all very well but it'd be nice to hear actual experience.

I’ve had septrin prescribed at 0.5ml twice a day so 1ml per day. I’ve had Sulfatrim (the adult version) prescribed at 0.3ml twice a day so 0.6ml per day. Both Emma and Ellen were on and off it during their lives for persistent UTIs and IC flares and up to 8 weeks at a time for both. Both girls tolerated both the septrin (which they preferred as it tastes of banana) and the Sulfatrim very well. I’m glad George is feeling better x
 
Sorry I’ve never been prescribed it, but glad gorgeous George is getting his appetite back 🤞

That sounds about OK for the equivalent of sulfatrim/cheaper generic brands etc. which are same strength as the old adult septrin.

It is double the strength of the old banana flavoured pediatric septrin that used to be prescribed before sulfatrim was licensed in the UK for small furries) that long term owners remember and which can cause confusion for long term owners or readers of older threads.
My experiences are overall good; it is certainly not as harsh on the tummy as baytril/enrofloxacin.

What a love boy George is!
