I have just gone through my piggy first aid box and found several bottles of unopened septrin. When I say unopened, I mean I haven't opened the dispensing bottle since it was dispensed from the vet. Some of the bottles are from 2017 and some are from earlier this year. Should they be binned or can they still be used?

I used one of them in an emergency situation the other day (permission granted from a vet to medicate) and it still looks and smells normal.

my vet stated septrin lasts one month ! ive kept mine 6 months before i discard the bottle !

Thank you. Does it last a month once it's been dispensed from the main bottle at the vets or once the dispensing bottle has been opened? The septrin that I have been using is one I've had for approximately 5 months

Both ! It's difficult the manufactures have to legally give an expiry date.if unopened it should last 1 year.needs to be kept in a dark bottle without contact to light.xx

My pharmacist told me that septrin doesn't go off once opened as long as it's used before it's expiry date. You probably have no idea when that is Claire unless the vet wrote it on the bottle they dispensed.
It won't harm the piggies to use it out of date but it may be ineffective. Best to get a fresh supply l think.

Thank you :) I started her on an emergency dose (with permission from a vet) when she first started weeing blood as it was too late to get her an appointment. I have been given a fresh bottle today so will start her on that. I'll bin the one I was using and the 2017 ones but I think I'll keep the 2018 ones in case of further emergencies as although Ellen hasn't had an IC flare for well over 10 months, I think she's going to have urinary issues for life x

Bless her. I hope she improves quickly xx

Thank you. She seems fine in herself apart from the odd squeak when urinating and is still gobbling up her veggies and mounting Edward :) I had her checked for ovarian cysts last week and she doesn’t have them, she just likes showing off her dominance and has big nipples which were also checked :) xx
