Gerty has a UTI at the mo & is on 0.5mls of septrin & 0.1ml of metacam twice a day. She does seem to be getting slightly better but has been on septrin for 2 weeks now - is it safe to keep her on it for a while longer? xx

I am sorry Gerty is suffering with cystitis! Not meaning to go too far off track here but how is Truffle doing too?

I think I have heard of guineas being on Septrin for quite a while...useful I know, not being specific. But it is a "gentle" drug on the system so is likely to be better tolerated for longer periods of time.

Do you know if the vet would up the dose at all? As much as 1ml twice daily has been given, although the norm is 0.5ml - 0.7ml twice daily.

Thanks Laura - I've got a full bottle of it seeing as everyone is ill rolleyes
I'll keep her on it for another week I think then if it won't do any harm xx

Oh no, not all of them? That is rotten luck! When it rains, it pours...

Ha ha no Laura, I was being sarcastic - Patch has just got over his UTI (touch wood) but Truffle is still having his probs & Max seems to have lost some fur (I think Billy may be barbering him mallethead) - just feels like it's all of them xx

I'm glad it's not really all of them, you had me worried for a second...should have twigged onto the emoticon there. rolleyes

I don't think late nights suit me. The important stuff comes through fine but everything else goes a bit fuzzy... :))

"When it rains, it pours... "

When it is cystitis, it dribbles.

3 weeks of septrin for a cystitis infection is the norm i think...the drug has to have time to penetrate the area, build up concentration and then retain that concentration level for at least two weeks - hence three weeks ..

Septrin is recommended for UTi's over baytril -
a) it has better penetrating power to ge through the blood to the bladder
b) itis much more effective against the type of bugs normally responsile for UTI;s than baytril

HTH and hope Gertie gets better soon

PS - sorry if I'm sounding repetitive to other forum users....but I have found- pearl barley water (from home-made boiled pearl barley 50-60mins and then seived) and cranberry is very effective at assisting with alleviating symptoms..(2ml 3-4x daily).whether it is caused by a bug or is "sterile" cystitis....
xx

Thanks Pebble, I've just bought some pearl barley so am going to give it a try. Gerty is the worst for any form of medicine & she will do anything to not have it. She hates cranberry juice with a passion so I've given up on that, strangely enough though she loves metacam mallethead

LOL - my piggie Muffin loves her heart meds - and is not averse to the odd bit of metacam...her (litle ?- seems rather long to me....) tongue tries to lick every bit off the syringe..the rest hate any meds rolleyes
