back again for more advise, Rodgers foot burst tonight, blood was everywhere his bumble foot has been swelling day by day for the past month and obviously got to the point where it's to big and has burst. Taking him vets tomorrow morning and I just no all they are going to say is wash it and give him pain meds which is what I do everyday already. If anyone else has had a guinea pig with a severe bumble foot like Rodger has and have found good treatments let me no as I'm open to anything! Here's some photos of his foot tonight, they are pretty gross!

Ouch! That looks really nasty! Please get your piggy seen as soon as possible! You may discuss the use of an antibiotic in combination of soaks with your vet.

Severe bumblefoot can be a real problem to clear and in some advanced cases it can only be managed, but not cured. :(

Please bandage the foot if possible to make sure that nothing gets into the open wound.

You may find these links here the most helpful as they list a range of possible treatments:

going to the vet is a priority.you maybe given oral antibiotics, analgesia, and foot soak,eg hibiscrub.have you thought about using vet bed bedding,if it is available in your location.it is very soft, similar to carpet, but can be washed .there maybe other medical conditions that are underlying that need to be treated.good luck it will be a longterm treatment.

That looks painful. I only have one thing to add. Bumblefoot can be linked to circulatory issues so if the vet has not already checked the heart I would ask them to. There are usually other symptoms too in most cases though.

I think it is an age thing he is very old, and yes he's on vet bed now he was on very soft bedding before but moved him onto vet bed. Washed it in salt water last night and bandaged it up. But I'll go get so hibi scrub today and see if that helps. He's been sufferenimg for years with it and it won't go away I don't think as he has arthritis in his legs so he puts more pressure on his front feet!

Has your vet checked/scanned for arthritis in the legs or spine as well as heart/circulatory issues?

Bumblefoot is not all that uncommon in older guinea pigs whose mobility/heart is not working fully anymore.

Been to the vets. Went to a different vets instead and they were much much mor helpful! His bone has fused in his leg with age which means he can't bend is foot in anyway, which is causing the bumblefoot to get this severe, she's put him on very strong antibiotics and also pain killers and has said don't wash it as all it's doing is re opening the wound causing it not to heal. Gunna go back in a week to have another checkup and to go from there. She's also taken a bit of tissue as she's not sure if it's actually a tumour on the bone and foot due to the size of his leg and foot so we shall see what they come back as. No point with any scans or anything as he's far to old for sedation of any kind, he just needs pain relief mainly!

Glad that you have found a better vet. Hopefully, the antibiotic and the painkiller will give him much needed relief, poor mite!

Fingers crossed that the news won't be too bad!

Finding the right vet is so important - looks like you are getting better care for you poor old man

Well done for getting a second opinion.

Poor boy, at least this vet could help. He will be much more comfortable now. He is such an amazing age.

I hope something can help soon, at least he will be more comfortable with painkillers & antibiotics. I think you know your little piggy & whether he should be put to sleep, or not. By the way how old is he?

Oh the poor old boy. That foot does look very painful! Hopefully with the right medication it will ease his discomfort!

I have had this problem with my guinea pig and it was serious but not quite as serious as yours. After I took him to the vet and got the antibiotic, I started rubbing Silver Sol gel (a coloidial silver gel) on his foot three times a day. It took two weeks or so but it totally cleared it up. The silver gel killed the bacteria and helped the foot heal up. You might give this a try.

I wasn’t sure what Bumblefoot was so I did some research. I’ve realised that my previous guinea pig had it for a long time before he passed. I’d always thought it was normal for his feet to look like that. I now know better for when my two current guinea pigs get older. I hope Rodger gets better!
