They are predicting severe weather this week with 100 mph winds in places :( Just to warn any outdoor piggy owners to be prepared just in case, so that in an emergency you have a back up plan to move them to somewhere safe etc rolleyes

can't we just have a moderate winter with moderately cold temps, a bit of rain, ice patches just to say it's winter and snow on high grounds cos it looks nice.... We nearly froze to death last year, my parents refused to come back for Christmas this year, the winds damaged our property and costs ££££s to repair and many months of anxious waiting.

Brrr, keep warm and safe everyone :)
My piggies are indoors in the lounge but I still pop the snugglepads in before I go to work rolleyes Just nice to know they're warm all day whilst I brave the elements to go to work to pay for their luxuries :(|) ;)

Important - please read!

Re: The weather forecast:

We are forecast
a) very very windy conditions - tonight and tomorrow morning and then Thursday night/friday
b) lots and lots of rain
c) big temperature drops.

a) Guinea pig hutches rising over 18" above ground level CAN be blown over with the type of winds that are forecast...even if they are in a sheltered spot...and especially if they are covered in tarpaulin or similar that is not absolutely securely fixed (it acts like a parachute) In my piggie-keeping lifetime I have had (very sheltered) hutches blown over 3 times...i.e. every time this type of extremely severe weather was forecast.. - luckily guineas were in them only once.

b) If you have a possible risk of surface water or other flooding - 60mm rain is forecast - please move them to higher ground (mindful that if you raise the cages to 60cm above ground level they can then be blown over in the winds!). Do not underestimate the speed and height to which flood water can rise if you are in a flood zone - make sure you have provision to take them to safe higher ground.

c) The wind chill factor/temperature drop coupled with driving rain penetrating the outdoor hutches is a no brainer. This is enviromental shock and within two weeks your piggie could develop a severe respiratory or other problem and not make it.

I'm sorry to be so stark....BUT.....

Please everyone with outdoor pigs subject to this weather make provision to keep them in an unheated safe area either indoors or in a shed/garage (even if just in cardboard boxes) during the worst of this weather to protect them from water, wind and environmental shock.

At the very least - make sure you have pet carriers etc prepared to transfer them to a safer/protected area if required.

It's a no brainer really - piggies aren;t designed to cope with this type of inclement weather combination all at once.

Thanks for bumping this up & particularly to Pebble for providing us with great information on what we may be looking forward to this week!

Keep your piggies safe everyone, make sure you have a plan if the weather does get as bad as they are predicting :)

At least now my piggies are inside, i don't have to go out in the cold to feed them.
It's so much nicer being able to see them washing themselves, and playing together, and sorting their veg over to find their favourite bits....i love it.

I was watching the weather forecast and there is an alert of torrential rain for tonight :/ Luckily I brought my bunny in before the extreme weather started. although I hope she doesn't get too hot :( mums keeps turning the heating back on. i am very worried about a trio of rabbits there was a thread about near me. Twiams was saying there is no adequate housing or rain/wind protection and I am worried about the critters :(

I can confirm the forecast weather has arrived at my door - I've told all the piggies just how lucky they all are to be inside with 24 hr heating and slave on tap too.

I hate this because all i think about are those poor piggies that don't have such caring owners as us lot. :(

Mine are okay in the piggy shed - it's heated, double glazed, insulated and warm. It even has curtains and draught excluders.

But I do feel for those stuck outside with no hugger or insulation. Not fair :(

Absolutely don't take any chances. Most of Scotland had this last week Thursday and it was lifting entire sheds and rooves never mind a little hutch. Batten down those hatches!

I am just heating all 5 snuggle heat pads. I have another 1 to come in the post. Its been so cold today even I have had a coat on.
