Hi Everyone,

We have 3 females who are all around 4 1/2 months old and just these past few days I noticed they are all taking turns of mounting each other.
I know they do the rumbling & dominance thing when they are in season but this is new and I was just wondering is it common ?.
Also would it be worth looking at adoption centres for getting a neutered male as dont want babies but would this help that behaviour ?
Sorry if sounds silly we're new to having guinea pigs & just want to do whats best for them all.
Thanks ☺

Not silly at all! Mounting is a dominance behaviour again and not sexual, so getting S neutered boy won't stop the behaviour. They'd probably just hump him too! :))

It's possible one of your sows is having a strong season, my Tonks is a relentless mounter when she's in season omg she is out of control. Spends almost all the day climbing on top of whoever she can find :))

It's completely natural, although it's not exactly polite or the way young ladies should behave there's nothing much to worry about :))

Yeah I know what u mean doesnt look polite lol, was just this morning it started, Pepper & Fudge wont leave poor Peaches alone & are climbing all over her.
But thats fine if perfectly normal will just leave them all to it

So it's likely a season, welcome to the joys of piggy parenthood! :P

Have you weighed them yet? It might be an idea to weigh them weekly (most of us do as weight loss is the first indication of illness) and just make sure Peaches is getting plenty of food and is putting on weight :)

Quite often trios of girls can result in someone getting a little bullied so just make sure it's not too much for her.

What size enclosure do you have for them currently? For all my pigs I always have 1 for each pig so 1 water bottle each, 1 food bowl each etc and space them around the enclosure so no one gets left out :)

Yeah we have been weighing them weekly and all 3 are putting on weight and doing lovely , vet seemed quite happy with their progress.
Fudge is also quite a bit of a bully so we have a 2 level cage at moment and due to Fudges behaviour she has 1 level & Pepper & Peaches are roomies, all have a food bowl & water bottle each and that seems to work fine, they all mix on floortime regularly and we rotate their living arrangements to keep each others smell around,
so for example Fudge on top deck & other 2 on bottom, nxt day Fudge on bottom & other 2 ontop , was vet suggested this as Fudge was getting vicious with Pepper initially, which is also why we got Peaches to give Pepper company as shes very timid.
We are looking to get the c&c cages and expand their living arrangements so the have a run attached and can be out and about as much as they please, but we do have them out usually as much as we are at home, unless a fight starts then its bedtime for a bit, but I have to say that has calmed right down from what it was b4 so hopefully what we're doing is right for them all. X

Ah that's a shame, will you be looking at a friend for Fudge? You could always try reintroducing them in a neutral area and go from there into a C&C cage. Otherwise adding a 4th girl or neutered boy can help calm things down.

When you say fight, how do you mean? If they're really fighting they should stay separate unfortunately, however most dominance displays look like fighting so are easily confused. They're not the gentlest of creatures!

Yeah it was more to do with dominance I think but she was biting ears & pulling out fur & getting a bit too full on, doing it most of time to Pepper, altho no blood as far as I know, so yeah thats my thought behind the c&c cage, to re introduce and have just the wire between them and then hopefully have a happy family for all 3 ladies,
or it would be a neutered male friend for her, altho I think she just likes to be the boss of the girls, maybe would have to be an older girl as her roomie, but I'll see how she goes and take it from there,
Altho I must say she seems quite happy with the arrangements this far, still putting on weight, playing better on floortime, she has improved this way alot, but still I would like her to benefit from being altogether if possible. X

Just wanted to add, are you 100% sure all 3 are female? Always a good idea to check once the hormones kick in and humping starts :)

Hiya, I previously had a check and all 3 looked the same so I was sure but no harm in checking again, so I will just to be on the safe side. Thank you. X

Sows experience hormonal swings and stronger seasons, too, during the teenage months. But as they are not usually leading to fights, most people are not aware of this fact. However, strong seasons and big hormones can happen at any time of the life. Sows are not engineered with a menopause; they are engineered to be nonstop pregnant as soon as they are weaned and to die relatively young from birthing complications or being worn out, so their hormones never peter out.

Sows in season will mount each other, especially if if you've got two in season at the same time. I've even seen some of my girls mount the neutered "husboar" they live with if the season is particularly strong, much to the chap's consternation. They will only mate with a boar once they are ready in the very last hours of their season, but there can be a lot of drama before that!

A neutered boar will not change this behaviour, but what he can do is to soak up some of squabbliness between the sows. While he is part of the group hierarchy, he is not part of the sow hierarchy, but in order to mate, he has to get on with all sows. Personally, I love my husboars. I've currently got 6 of them...

Mounting is normal behavior in females and is usually either a female in heat experiencing a particularly hormonal time or another dominance behavior. Some pigs get very frisky when they are in heat, with others you would never even know!
