I did some calling around to every rescue that deals with gps within a 50mile radius of me ( live in the states). Apparently these people are not very gp smart... They told me that gps, even sows cannot be in groups of more than two! Also told me that females absolutely can not be with a neutered boar. Wth! They told me so many things that just aren't true! I can see why the ones that do have gps for adoption rarely get them forever homes! I tried correcting them but apparently I'm an idiot who has no idea what I'm talking about!

Sorry this is so long but i found this appalling! :hb::rant::cen:And needed to vent

I'm not totally surprised at their lack of knowledge actually, I rung round a few rescues here when I was trying to find another boar companion for my intact boar and one of them told me that you should not keep boars together :hb:. I found that it seemed to be the ones that concentrated mainly on rescuing rabbits ( maybe boy rabbits cant be kept together I don't know as not familiar with rabbits).

That's so sad. I hate how they think just because we are public we have no knowledge. It really annoys me.

I was reading a guinea pig book today and it said that a guinea pig needs a large cage and the photo was a single guinea pig by itself and the cage was about the size of the guinea pig if he was doubled. The poor thing had barely any room to even move!

Well the good thing is that you probably know a lot more than these rescues & will look after your piggies properly. If you need advice you're a member of the best gp forum in the world so will get all the help you'll ever need without having to ask appalling rescues like the ones you've contacted.

I had nasty argument with one lady regarding diet because "hay and veg are treats and should be given only as rare treats" I was disgusted went off telling her that while pellets are often cheaper and easier pigs don't have "pellets" in the wild! I just want to smack sense into these people... Some also told me gps are solitary animals:yikes::rant::cen:

They can, I'm rehoming 2 lop bucks in the next week or so, they have lived together since they were kitts, they're just over 12 months old. ;)

I am very sorry for about your experience, and even sorrier for all those poor guinea pigs in the care of those rescues! Even here in Britain, there is a fair number of rescues that are not piggy savvy, but the US have still to catch up. It is the reason why we started to establish our list of recommended rescues. Sadly, really good rescues (and they exist!) are far and few in between. The bad news is that your closest good piggy rescues are a long way in another state. :(

Hopefully, you can find a suitable companion soon!
