So changes are afoot...and in turn the pigs are having a new home and some will be pleased to know it means a shed.

After years of 'managing' outside in their cosy hutches, i'm having a custom made 9 x 12ft jobbie.
I'd like to understand some of the hits and misses when having shed, the hutches will go inside.:yahoo:

It will have an over hang roof, double doors, internal mess screen door and windows again with mess. I'm having an external run also built with a large tube so they can go venturing out.

I've managed to get some old carpet tiles from work and it will have lighting, heat and a drop down table for nail clipping etc.:ple:

But I would really appreciate some of the things that don't work with shed so I can rectify it before it's built as it's going to cost me a fortune, money I now don't have but they will need a hutch because of the move.

Many thanks in advance.:hip:

Insulation I think is a must, floor, walls and ceiling. Foil backed will also help keep heat out in summer.
The reason I gave up on mine was that I couldn’t keep it cool enough in the summer , but it was in full afternoon sun so was probably never going to work!
Shelves I think are a good idea. I had a nice wide shelf the length of my shed and kept all their stuff on; pellet bag, hay bag, travel box etc
Will it have any ventilation for winter when the windows stay shut?

I would put screens on the windows so cats/birds can’t get in when windows are open. Position of the shed would be best west or east facing so it gets either morning or later afternoon sunshine, avoid south or north facing.

Thanks guys for that very informative. Yep I've chosen a position so it's not in direct sun.

I hadn't thought about the ventiliation for winter so that's a great point.

Got me thinking.

Give me a month and I will post pictures x

hi,

l have a summer house l' ve done for my piggies,if you look at the thread 'it's here',it might give you some ideas,

I used to have a piggy/rabbit shed many years ago and one thing I would say is to fit a decent lock on it if your back garden is not 100% secure.
Also decent shelves well off the ground and chew proof containers for food to prevent rats. Once they find a food source they can be hard to get rid of.

But I did live in London so maybe these things are less of an issue where you live.
