Hi Everyone, I need some advice. Is it normal for a guinea pig to shed a huge amount like when you run your fingers through her fur, you will end up with tons on your hand and your clothes will end up with lots of fur?

Hi! Some piggies do shed quite a lot while others do so less. As long as there are no balding areas, you need not worry. With a few piggies you end up thinking that they must surely be bald in view of them shedding enough for a felting a whole yurt, but they somehow never do...

Shedding a lot of hair can also be a stress response.

Best wear special 'piggy' overclothes at home and wash your hands regularly. Also wash any cosies either in a special bag (especially in rented accommodation) and/or beat and shake them out before washing, wiping the drum and checking the washing machine filters regularly.

Thank you for your advice :)

With both of my current piggies being almost all white I've learnt not to wear black clothes when I'm with them! Or I look like a half pig/half human! :)
My last pair didn't shed half as much!

Welcome to the forum.
I have a long haired piggy who likes to share her fur when I groom her.
As @Wiebke said - don’t worry unless it’s leading to bald patches.

I love the image of felting a yurt Wiebke - that made me smile

If you'd ever met Nerys who had the biggest bum imaginable and shed hair like there was no tomorrow, you'd feel the same! :D

It seems to vary depending on the pig. Some of mine shed very little, some of them leave you with a huge ball of fur on your hand and clothes whenever you pet them (we had a family joke about our worse shedder, Sundae, that if you pat Sundae you got a second Sundae for free, because you could easily end up with a ball of fur about the size of her body!)

Thanks everyone for your help. She doesn't have any balding patches so far. Will update again if i start to see them :)
