Shimmer and Saffron

My poor little darlings are recovering from heat stroke.

They went all floppy and listless. It was awful.

I put cold tap water gently on their ears and put them into their run in the north facing front garden with a cardboard box lined with newspaper to hide in and a fleece cage liner on the wet grass so the temp change wasn't too marked for them.

I put them into Cindy's play cage (dwarf hybrid hamster) with lots of hay and greens for the night and gently eased a bit of water into each of them via a syringe. I also gave them salt and sugar solution.

They have had fluids from the vet and he said I had done all the right things (I said it was thanks to the guinea pig forum that I knew what to do).

They are still in the play cage and have been eating. Shimmer has got almost lively. Both slept for hours after the vet visit. I had a power nap today as well. What an emotional roller coaster.

Anyway all thanks to this wonderful forum and to the lovely vet. Very grateful to have my darlings on the mend.

What a scare you must’ve had :( Hope they make a full recovery soon thanks to your quick actions.

Poor piggies. I hope they feel better soon.

Sending you hugs. It can happen so quickly.

Thank goodness you spotted it so quickly !
I hope your lovely girls get better asap 🥰

Heat stroke is a great worry and can happen so quickly. I'm very glad they are OK now ❤️

Thanks everyone. I really appreciate the comments.

Shimmer is munching away and seemed to relish lawn time today (north facing garden, nice and shady/cool). Saffron ust stayed in the same position as she does in the temporary cage I have for them in my room. I do syringe feed her with water and with pellet mix but she does her best to get away from the syringe and hardly any goes in.

I have seen Saff Saff eat but not much at all.

Perhaps she needs to see the vet again for hydration injections?

Saffron is not doing well. She has been tooth grinding and staying very still.

She eats a bit.

I took her to the vet who gave her another injection of saline solution. He sent me home with some loxicam and emperid. They don't seem to have made any difference. I am worried about her.

At least the tooth grinding has stopped.

Sadly little Saffron died this morning. Shimmer sat with her for most of the day.

Only yesterday I was gazing at her thinking how lucky I was to have a little beauty in my life. RIP lovely girl.

New shed coming soon (Thursday). Once I have got the guinea pig shelf ready I will get a little friend for Shimmer and they will be introduced straight into that new space.
