Shocked at Vet Prices

My local vets charge £18 for a consultation on my guinea pig which I don't mind paying after all you are paying for their professional diagnosis after all:)

What gets me is the subsequent charges, after when they have been seen .

For my dog these equal £27 a time and he had to be seen 4 times before his ear infection cleared up this equals £108 just in fees without the medication, the total charge was £165 this time around

where is that ?Next time I will bring my sows to him.

Going slightly off track concerning the cost of vets and piggies I've just brought 4 x milbemax tabs for the cats at a cost of £24!

I've been using advocate for worming and flea treatment for the past year so finding out the tablets had doubled in price was a bit of a shock.

You can get away with just using advocate unless the cat is prone to hunting and stuff. The only additional benefit to Milbemax on top of advocate is cover against tapeworm

I was charged £15.50 for a consultation and invoiced a bill for £8 for a urine test - not my usual vet I hasten to add.
Another vet charged us little under £40 just to check one of our girls eyes when we first had her - no treatment needed but I was a bit blown away at their charges. The same vet wanted Harley my bladder stone piggy to have x-rays, £120 and around £160 for his surgery (she actually laughed when she quoted this grrrr and the staff were cold and unfriendly pow-pow) and he had to be hospitalised the night before :... We decided to risk another day and took him to our regular vet who charged us £210 for the same procedures, post op antibiotics and pain relief meds. and no overnight stay :) Money isn't the issue when they're ill but I cannot justify how prices vary (bit like shops selling the same stuff but at a higher price for the same quality :{)

Unfortunatly we do have a couple of hunters in the pack and the old girl Jess is constantly hungry at the moment so I thought worm with a tablet and if that doesnt alter things than off to the vets for tests.

is she losing weight? Might be an idea if worming doesnt work to check her thyroid (our tortie had this in her 9th year)

She has lost weight but shes recently had a dental - shes 12. The over-active thyroid had crossed my mind Polly our 1st cat developed this at about the same age.

I have used all sorts of vets in the past when I did not know any better. Fortunately with the help of a local rescue centre and Vedra at CCT I found a wonderful vets in Tilehurst. They are not cheap but I would far rather have them look after my animals than anyone else. I have to travel 40 mins to get there every time (and seem to spend far too much time there!) but I would not have it any other way.

I used an 'exotic' vet specialist in Andover once and I would go as far as to say they were darn right cruel and it upsets me terribly now to think that I put my guinea through all that before finding Tilehurst.

I also used to get soooo nervous going to the vet, kind of association with bad things. I am not typically an emotional person but I used to be nearly in tears and sick with worry by the time my name was called. Now I really look forward to seeing my vet and having a guinea chat and I know she cares for my guineas as I would. Worth every penny.

I think like most things, you pay for what you get and building that relationship with your vet is so important.

About 1/3 of cats 8 years + get hyperthyroid. I learnt something at work today :))
