Shopping at Pets at Home (supplies only)

I sometimes buy from PAH although I am trying desperately to find an independent similar priced seller online....for hay, sawdust (for my hammy) and burgess excel nuggets.

I usually buy from my local independent pet store though she doesn’t sell burgess excel and she also does sell livestock (she breeds budgies and only sells budgies) I love the idea of my pennies going towards a local business, and the hay is from a local source...but it is expensive! So i wouldn’t mind trying out an online retailer....so far i shop at zooplus for my toys, i just cant seem to find a good priced hay and sawdust supplier!

But yes i would have to say PAH is for connivance really.

depends really when we wanted shampoo and mite protection it was a friday and the easiest way is for OH to pick some up on his way home from work. Other than coming into the centre of the city there is no where else we could get this from and even the other shops that sell these products in Leicester all stock animals so the only other option is to buy online... which is great if you can wait up to a week for the item to be delivered, not so great if you want to get them washed that weekend.

So yes convenience or even not being able to get it anywhere else without waiting for a delivery (made harder by us always being out when royal mail try to deliver so having to go to the collection centre).

On the plus side I ordered a pet carrier this week off of ebay and it arrived this morning so where possible I try to prevent shopping somewhere that sells animals.

have you tried animal magic pet supplies?

Eeee! Animal magic pet supplies is good value, oooohh I'm so ordering from them once mr thimble and the boys have gone through their hay and sawdust! Carefresh for the hammy is good too....Oooooo....

I have always used pets at home for nuggets up until recently, the reason being its been convenient and I wasn't aware of local suppliers near me.
My hay and woodshavings I get from Countrywide which is the best in price (120litres of woodshavings for £8.99) much cheaper than any pet shops.

But...I have now discovered a really cheap pet food store on my way to work in Stratford, can't remember what it's called but their nuggets and hay are better value. They also sell toys, treats, biscuits and meat for our doggie :(|)

Well P@H is the only pet shop that specialize in all animals. Local tesco stores only stock muesli which is fine if I desperately need bun or guinea pig food so used to buy my nuggets from theyr. I have only recently got my guinea pigs and I got them from a rescue but the only place close to the rescue was pets at home so i bought some simple supplies from there although I will buy the bulk of my supplies online as I have found a site where i can get my bunny food for £4 cheaper (burgess excel) and i might test out some megazorb too :)

I buy treats and toys from my piggies and bunnies from there. :) I would never buy an animal for them but I don't see a problem with buying them things. :) Just because one person didn't spend their money there (and in this situation it would be me) wont make any difference, they aren't going to close down. If they see that more people just buy supplies than animals then I think it's a good thing. :) I love going there to treat my pets :(|)

Besides, I like my local pets at home, the downside is that they sell animals but they are always doing their bit to help rescues and recently donated over £1000 to a local cat rescue. :) The staff are also very knowledgeable and I've heard them giving out good advice to people wanting to buy pets. The animals are kept in large pens and always have veg and hay in there as well as toys and shelter. I think they are great and wish that if there had to be pet shops, all were like my local P@H!

I go to my local P@h as I buy their nuggets as it seems the only ones my piggies like, I also buy the woodshavings from there as in my local area they the only ones that sell the really big bags which saves time in having to keep going back for more every week so thats the only things I really buy out of there as I have noticed over the last couple of years their prices have shot up and they getting expensive to what they use to be.

Hay I buy from another local petshop as my piggies prefer the thicker stranded hay as i find P@H have grounded down they hay finer and finer as time goes on which is better for bedding than eating in my opinion.

I still prefer to go out and buy the likes of hay and woodshavings etc rather than buy them online not sure why but i like to look at what i am buying, but i will buy toys or accessories online.

I'm assuming most people here have a vet they use or would use. Most vets can order in supplies but not all of them publicise that they do. Our vets order in Excel in sacks for us and they don't mark up the cost at all. Worth checking out if it's a choice between that and P@H.

I buy hay and dry food from a local feed supplier. They will order in the excel nuggets for me that I previously bought at P@H. :)

I try not to buy much from the place anymore, i really dont like the store anymore, but i wont rant here.

I now buy my 10KG bag of excel nuggets from my local pet store, who kindly home deliver. I unfortunatly dont have much choice with the hay. With the long shifts i work, and lack of places that sell excel herbage and hay i cant afford to go anywhere else for the lots hay, thats open late. But thats about all i get from there. So the main reason is there isnt anywhere else that sells the products i want/need.

I'm ashamed to say many of my piggies have come from PAH, but i will not be easily getting another from them. Next time i will be rescuing.
