Hi everyone! Hope you all had lovely Christmas' and even better New Years! :)

I wondered if i could ask for some opinions about Louis' teeth. i gave the boys their bath last week and when i did i gave them their usual checkover. when i came to checking Louis' teeth they seemed a little over grown and one of the bottom ones is growing a little strange. i hadnt picked up on any problems with him because he is eating absolutely fine and has no obvious weight loss, but when i saw his teeth and especially after comparing them to Max's, i was a little concerned.

here are a few piccies taken today, would love peoples opinions.Obviously i am pulling his gums right back for the piccies to reveal as much of his teeth as possible.

If his teeth do require some work, would i be better off seeking a rodentologist in the area? my vets are quite good and I'm sure if i asked about doing dental work without anaesthetic they might agree to it, but if anyone knows of any good rodentologists in the birmingham area id appreciate it! we dont drive so we cant travel too far but can obviously use trains too if there are any close by to get to. i might be jumping the gun asking this though, i do tend to over worry when it comes to the fur babies :red but i figure id rather over worry and maybe catch things early, than dismiss it as nothing only to regret it later.

Hi and welcome to the forum

Louis' teeth certainly do look as if they are a wee bit longer than they should be. Obviosuly I am not in the Birmingham area and I have only recently just joined the forum myself but there will definately be someone on here that can recommend a rodentologist for you.

I hate checking our boys teeth so i let my OH do it they can then hate him for doing it instead of me lol

Hey Ryo, not seen you around for ages! I hope you are well and had a good Christmas and New Year yourself.

Louis' teeth aren't meeting correctly, unfortunately. It is hard to tell for sure from the photos what the specific problem is, but it is clear that the teeth are not *quite* aligned or wearing against each other as they should.

You could try sending a message to alcesterpigs, he's in the Birmingham area and may be able to help or advise someone locally.

sorry Ryo I thought you were new to the board if I had read the side bit I would have seen you joined ages ago

anyway nice to meet you as I'm a newbie here

The only picture of real value is the first one, which shows his lower teeth are tilted, this could indicate a problem with his back teeth.
The second and third pictures both show a lower jaw deviation. Since the deviation is to the left in one photo and to the right in the other it is reasonable to assume that this is caused by the way you are holding him.

Thanks for all the replies. Yes we got a few piccies of his teeth so i thought it best to just put them all up for people to see. As i said in my first post i did think the teeth were a little long myself so thankyou all for confirming that I'm not just over worrying as usual! :red:)) Ive got an appointment with the vet for tuesday morning so i will see what she says when she checks his back teeth but i will be sure to request all dental work being done without aneasethetic. I have actually got some experience with clipping rattie teeth(i know some dont agree with clipping teeth but if the rats are anything to go by it obviously doesnt bother them too much the way they always grabbed for the yoggies straight after!) so if it turns out to just be the front teeth that are a problem and need regular clipping i should be ok, though obviously wouldnt mind having to bring him for regular dental work either! fingers crossed his back teeth are ok though! shall update on tuesday :)

Mojules-no worries! i dont get online much anymore so I'm not a regular poster on any forum anymore either so you are very much forgiven for thinking I'm a newbie too! :)) nice to meet you too!

Just wanted to give a quick update as Louis went to the vets today! The vet said that the bottom teeth did look a little over grown so those were burred back for him. she tried to get a good look at his back teeth with that instrument they put in the mouth(I'm not sure what its called!) but he had alot of food in his mouth:))she said from what she could see everything looked fine though:) so il just keep an eye on those bottom teeth now and hope that they grow back more inline with the top teeth and not cause him any more problems! atleast i know my vets will do the dental work without aneasethetic-i didnt even have to ask. oh, and i also wasnt charged for it!

Anyway i do feel a little bad as i hadnt checked the calander before booking the appointment and it is actually Louis' 4th birthay today! so i feel a little mean having put him through that on his birthday but atleast we know not to worry for the moment and he will be getting his birthday veg shortly too!

Thanks again for the replies, il be sure to post back here if he has any future problems!
