Hi

I lost my piggie Jasmine at the weekend. She had lymphoma and it just got the better of her. Her sister Daisy is only three years old and is now alone and I really want to get her a friend but I have some concerns.

Daisy is a very dominant piggie, when I introduced her to Jasmine (after the death of her true sister Rosie) there was alot of rumble strutting and a little tooth chattering (from Daisy) but after less than 24 hours they were good friends. I don't want to introduce another sister if there is any chance of them not getting on. I have kept piggies for many years and introduced girls to girls and boys to boys with no problem but Daisy is a bit of a different case. I took her to the vet today for her claws to be clipped and he said she seemed a little unsettled (it was her first time to the vet alone) and suggested a friend might be the solution.

Any advice or tips very gratefully received.

Lots of rescues will do piggy dating so you can take her and she can decide who she likes.

The Blue Cross in Burford has just helped with a large Piggy Bank UK rescue and have several females there who will be looking for new homes once they are ready - I've seen pics of the piggies there and they are fabulous!

Oh my...whilst checking out their website for the phone number I spotted Ralph! I am in piggy love......

I found piggy dating at a rescue the best way to make a bereaved piggy of any age happy again. You can consider neutered boars as well as sows; you may be surprised! I have dated three year old sows with both genders successfully. Cross gender bonds can be very loving and are usually the most stable of them all.

Here is a our map of recommended high standard guinea pig rescues. The vast majority offer piggy dating. It is worth going that bit further afield, as you get a lot of service and a minimum of risk to yourself - the bonding happens under expert supervision and you will only come home with a new piggy that works out. As rescues are run on private initiative and strictly by donations, they are not evenly spread over the country.

Ralph

I called the Blue Cross today about Ralph x)x). The lady I need to speak to wasn't in so is going to call me back tomorrow. If all goes well I am hoping to take Daisy to meet him this weekend and if she likes him I am going to adopt him.

So a quick question, do you think a neutered boar will get on with my dominant Daisy pig?

Aww great news x)

Good luck with Daisy and Ralph, it's hard to tell if it will work but only time will tell !

Sadly Ralph was already reserved and the rescue had no other piggies available right now. I tried a couple of other rescues but they had no guinea pigs at all. However, I was at my local pet shop (small, family run and very good) buying hay and spotted the cutest little baby piglet. She had been rejected by everyone else as she has red eyes and is white (so in some people's eyes "not pretty") and was all alone in her pen. I loved her instantly and the pet shop said I could take Daisy to meet her there. If all goes well and we get her she is going to be called Piglet.

Fingers crossed it all goes well.

good luck, hope all goes well.... Oh and piglet sounds great to us...

She is beautiful and I hope Daisy thinks so too. She has the cutest little cream smudge on her nose and her little ears are black. How anyone could reject her I have no idea. The pet shop lady said they have given her lots of extra cuddles as she was alone and she was very calm about being handled given that she is only 11 weeks old. The shop opens at 10.00 tomorrow so I am going to be waiting outside.

It went really well. Daisy and Piglet are getting alone fine. They have been playing and warbling at each other. Daisy has licked Piglet's nose and shared her popcorn stick with her. Now they are both in the hut sleeping off an afternoon of playing. Daisy has been amazing and I think Piglet has been really good for her.
