Hope this is in the right place...
At the moment, living together are 2 4 year old sows and a 6 month sow. All was fine until last night when suddenly one of the older sows got dominant and wouldn't let the 6month old in the bed area. Then she wouldn't let her eat or drink - I put 2 of each in to stop this, plus an extra pigloo.

I am worried about the 6 month old though (she's a loner now!) :( she is quite a headstrong pig, and the reason she's with 2 older (more confident!) girls is because she hates younger pigs! She nips and bullies them. So getting her a younger friend is out of the question. I was wondering if her & a boar (neutered! of course!) would go nicely together? Do dominant sows get on with males easier? I wonder if she just doesn't like other females :-\

I wouldn't like to seperate her from all guineas until the end of her days :( maybe when I've tried everything else

I would never put her on her own...not a good move...

Um...yeah, the right boar couldbe the answer...

I'm not sure on this, but its myu opinion an odd number of guineas is never good, as one is always left out...maybe you could even have a herd of 4, and see how that goes (3 sows, 1 neuterd boars)

There are lots of neutered boars in rescues, and I'm sure one is perfect for you :smitten: :smitten: :smitten:

well as you said it seems as though shes only been in with 2 other sows that doesnt mean there isnt a sow out there for her to keep her company :smitten:
Its probably cause shes scared :-\

I would try a neutered boar in with them all first and if that didnt work then split them into 2 pairs. I have 4 girls living with a boar and it works a treat :)

I would go to a rescue and ask for a boar that is dominant - I have come across some wimpy males (at a friends place) and the girls were bossing the males about! I would def. try a boar in the group - but get him from somewhere where they can give you a good idea about his character, because it will not change the situation if you put a boar with the group that just runs away from your bossy girl!

Why do I think adding a boar would work? Well I noticed that after my first boar died, and I had two girls left, the older one started being really nasty to the younger one, nipping her, chasing her, teeth chattering. As soon as another boar came to the group, the older sow was behaving again - as if she just dared being lippy because there was no guy about to keep her in check! she was a right cow until a male was there again, as if she was put "back into her place" just by male presence lol!

I think there needs to be a piggy feminist movement lol!

Perfectpiggies, I did wonder if an odd number was a problem
ILA, yeah I think she might be scared of other piggies, she was bullied as a baby :(

thanks for all your replies...I'll look into getting them a neutered boar friend.

a boar could be the answer, they will always be the dominant one (well usually). Well my herd of 3 work fine together. mind you it's mum and 2 babies. (2 sows, 1 neutered boar) they love being together, and nobody gets left out, but this could just be a rare thing.
they let bertie think he's the dominant one, but peony (the mum) is really the one who is alert, and protects the others, she even barbered bertie to make him realise that she's boss! ;D anyway all i'm saying is that it isn't necessarily the odd number, but i think having 1 boar works well for me O0 hope that helps a bit LOL! ::) ;D

Where abouts are you Starla, if you post on the rescue board, someone may be able to help, there seem to be a tremendous amount of pigs needing homes at the moment :-\

I'm in quite an awkward place! :( I might have sorted it for today - put the youngest in with 2 other sows...I would love to rehome one (or more) if I could. I'll look into how much room I've got

ok so this isn't working with my 6 month old - I've taken all your advice and decided to get her and the two older sows a neutered male. see the rescue section :)
