Hi,
I have a 3 x 6 C&C cage with a 2x1 missing in the corner so effectively have a 16 C&Csq with a 4x1 loft (see picture below) I was wondering how many guinea pigs could comfortably live in this.
I currently have 3 sows living in it but I am keen to get maybe 1 or 2 more but I don't want them to be too crowded.
My current 3 piggies are around 7-8 months old although they've lived together since the youngest was 2-3 weeks old, they seem quite independent of each other and don't really snuggle up to each other (unlike my previous piggies, who would snuggle up to each other and follow each other round their cage and run). Even when they are on my lap, they would quite frequently go in opposite directions (that could of course be a ploy to distract me so I can't get hold of all of them). I'm worried that eventually 2 of them might pair off and leave the 3rd one all by herself. I was wondering whether a bigger herd of sows will help them gel more or whether having a neutered male would be better.
At the end of all this, I might just keep the status quo and see how they settle as they grow up. I suspect at the moment, there is a lot of tussle for dominance when I'm not around as they are now at the "teenage" stage. I guess I am always tempted by piggies I see on rescue and other sites and it would be good to know how many piggies this cage will hold and also how it might affect the dynamic of the herd. (I've introduced piggies before - 1 piggy to 2/3 bonded ones but my 3 does not seem that bonded together at least not outwardly).
Your comments would be invaluable in helping me weigh up the pros and cons of increasing the herd.
