Should I Get My Pig A Friend?

I have a male guinea pig who is 2.5 years old and have had him for about 4 months. I am his third and final owner. His previous owners have told me that he has been a single guinea pig his whole life and has never had a cage mate. I really want to get a second pig so he can have company when I am at work. I am a little worried that if I get another guinea pig that he will not get along with him since he hasn't ever had a cage mate. Any suggestions or similar experiences? Thanks!

Oh that's so sad that he has been all alone! I'm glad that you have him now though. A friend of mine had a single boar for 2 or 3 years and she then took on a rescue, and they got on very well. She found that her original boar began to eat more, and I'm sure he was a lot happier to finally have a friend.

Thank you! His previous owner had him in a super small cage so I built him at large C&C cage and he is much happier. I can only imagine how much happier he will be with a friend! Do you recommend I get a baby or a full grown piggy?

Others here will have more experience on ages than me but the rescue boar my friend had wasn't a baby but may have been younger than her boar. I have been able to introduce new sows to each other of all ages.

Some rescue centres do
'Boar dating' so that you can be sure they like each other before you take any new pig home. Adopting from a reputable rescue also ensure you get one of the correct sex and that it is totally healthy when it comes home

Its personalities that count on finding the right friend, although a baby boar is likely to bond easily, however you may get problems in their teenage years, although not always. He definitely would be happier with a friend

I've had my little guy since March so he's just 11months old. today I brought home a little sow (he's going to be neutered) and he got so excited! he was on his own too because the other guinea pigs bullied him in the pet shop.
I think you should get a friend for him and introduce them slowly. I have my c&c cage split in two for the moment so they can see and smell each other. he hasn't stopped burbling since she arrived!
