I'm thinking of getting elvis neatured. if we try to bond him and it doesnt work out then we wont have enough space for them both. so should i get elvis neatured and him a girlfriend?

I think alot depends on the vets near you and elvis age. I wanted to get one of mine neutered but the vets in my area dont have alot of experience with it and i didnt trust them to do it, closest vet i would of trusted was over an hour away. I dont know why its an unpopular op around here. I introduced him to a baby and they are inseprable now. Its lovely to watch them together and they follow each other everywhere. Is there a rescue close to you that you could take elvis to and let him pick a cage mate himself?

they do but they have a pair of boys and you have to take them together. that would be trio i dnt like that idea. elvis is around 10 months

I know someone here recently took there boar to a rescue and he didnt get on with the babies they had but did get on well with an 8mth old boar who he now lives with. Iv heard the introductions have a better chance of lasting if two older boars are introduced rather than a baby becuase with babies they can fall out when the babie reaches maturity but not sure as iv only paired up adults and babys. I'm getting a 6mth old boar from pets at home soon and when hes settled thinking of taking him to a rescue to see what hes like with older boars instead of bonding him with a baby. I think alot depends on the pigs personality. Someone who has more experience with bonding adults can probably advise you better. I do keep a trio and its definently more tricky than keeping two. One of my trio was being bullied by the others and had to be temporarily seperated but at the moment there living happily together after re introducing them slowly.

hi there, i had a similar situation to this a while ago with my bertie. he was lonely, and i had a girlie that was on her own, so the obvious thing was to get him neautered and put him wiht her. he came through the op ok, but we had a struggle getting him back to his normal self. you must check how experienced yourr vet is, i was very happy with mine, and he did all he could for us particularly regarding his more difficult recovery he could not be more lively or fit now though! i'm still not sure weather it was worth it, as he isn't with her yet, but on saturday we do the great introductions! i'm sooo excited, yet nervous, it would be awful for him and us to have gone through all that for nothing, and for them both to be in the same position. i will let you know how the intros go.

If I were you I would, but I know my vet and the method/drugs used.

Do you have girls already? It may not work out with them so castration could be pointless, if you haven't then take him to a rescue after the castrate and let him choose a girl or two.

Tough decision.

nop elvis is the only one i have and what you mean behaviour change isit like they forget who you are or something?

I'd say be careful if you do because not all sows like the idea of a boyfriend! I learned this the hard way when my girls just didnt get on with my boy and attacked him quite a bit, I've since had success with a baby who so far just loves him and he seems to like having her there. All I'm saying is that there is still not a 100% chance that a female would work either, depends on the piggies x

I agree with Emma, i have a sow who hates all men & another sow who only likes her man, there are no guarantees that sows will accept a boar.
As Karen says the best thing would be to let him/them choose one another :)

And give them more than 10 mins :) i only gave mine 10 mins and they were fine and then when we introduced them properly it went very pear shaped !

It shows that on their "own turf" things can change - fickle lil creatures they are :smitten: :smitten:
