Ok, so one of my best friends' sister wants pet guinea pigs. She's nine (I think) and she has a tendancy to grow bored of her pets. Her older sister is the same age as me and a huge worryguts. She has a dog and a hamster, so I'm fairly sure she could take good care of any piggies. The family has a nice big back garden, and a shed in the garden for the pigs in the winter. The dog is a big softy, and the mum is at home all day (she's a childminder). I think that this would be a good home for two piggies (I'm gonna recomend boars to them!) and I'm hoping for some advice please :))

its all well and good recommending piggies if they are a good home but be sure to warn them of the downsides too. like the costs of vet/hay/pellets/veges/cages and the fact that the piggies need to be handeled reguarly even if the novelty wears off(not sure how people can get bored of piggies lol).Just make sure you give them info on the hard parts, you will notice once you have done this 50% of people decide against piggies because they don't realise that they are more than a pocket pet, good luck helping the family x

Perhaps too you could get them to come on and join up and do some research first........wish i'd done that mallethead but you learn later.
Anyways once they've looked around and asked some questions that might help them too :)

Agree with Bonnie and Gracie too :)

I would be incourging them to do a lot of research into pigs before they went ahead and got any, with a nine year old that gets bored and also the mum doing childminding from home I would be worried that something may happen to them.

Our neighbours daughter was up with her child the other week and one of the other grandchildren were up aswell. They are both about 2 or 3 and the mum was saying how she was looking to get a piggie and if we could bring one of ours out to see how her son acted towards one. Took out one of the girls, sat down next to them and asked if he wanted to talk to her but he just looked and said no and carried on playing. So the mum is happy now she's not going to end up buying an animal that he won't be interested in after a few days. She's going to wait until he is alot older now until she considers getting him an animal. I think mum telling her about all the vet bills we've had aswell put her off so they are just going to stick with having 1 pet and that's their dog.

Ok, thankyou everyone. I'll encourage them to do some research, and I might invite them over to meet my pigs and tell them the pros and cons of piggy-keeping (of course, there are loads more pros :D).

try to get them to visit a local rescue as part of the research. They can learn the practical skills there too like handling and how to clean them out.
