Is cactus ok for Piggys. Scanned the shopping list sticky but couldn't make out if it was ok or not ok? Help please!

Do you mean cactus fruit as opposed to the spiky plant?
I've read on a US forum that as long as you peel it and remove the seeds it should be ok.

I'm quite jealous as I've NEVER seen an edible cactus on sale in Scotland. I think the most exotic fruit I've ever seen in my local supermarket is a pineapple ;)

No I actually mean cactus plant however it's been processed to the point of no spikes or anything except the skin and mush part... It's chopped up into little chunks. I gave my piggy eat anything smores a small peice and watched for any signs of not tolerating it. He nommed it down and begged for more and I had to laugh at his obvious displeasure at only getting one peice of something new and apparently yummy to him.... Did I ever get the stink eye on that one. I'm not sure why a human would need cactus in their diet but there it was in with the veggies, so I grabbed a small bag thinking it may prove a healthy piggy treat. Smores is fine this morning so I assuming its ok for them. I waa a nervous nelly and had our emerg vet posted and waiting should it go bad. I'm not sure I did the right thing by trying it .... But I love to give them variety .
I'm going to watch him another day and give another small peice. If he proves fine thru that I will try the others on it. Unless someone with more experience gets on an tells me for certain it's a piggy no no.
Pineapple is rare there? Oh my here in Texas they are a grociery store staple! We have all sorts of fruits and veggies... Largely due to being next door to Mexico I think.

Lol I was exaggerating slightly. I'm pretty sure it depends where you go. Sometimes I go looking for exotic fruits in our supermarket (like persimmon or dragon fruit) and I can't find any, just pineapple lol.

Thats what I love about the US, so many different choices of everything! I tried buying a soda once and I was just overwhelmed by all the different kinds!

But I digress, I'm glad nothing bad happened when you fed the cactus.:)

Did a quick google, and found this:

"Be sure your guinea pig always has fresh water. Wild guinea pigs are the little camels of South America - it seems like they never need to drink freestanding water. Their trick is that they eat cactus and other succulents to get their fluids. Domestic guinea pigs don't usually get these wet greens, so they should have a full water bottle available to them at all times."

Sounds like they can, although don't think my piggies will get the option - cactus isn't on the shelves in Birmingham (UK) either. It was from this site http://www.petplace.com/small-mammals/keeping-your-guinea-pig-healthy/page1.aspx.

Thank you so much! I think I will make it an occasional treat but I don't think them having it everyday would be good...I would think we would get runny poos if I did. I will try the other boys a peice of it this evening and see what they think !

Strangely a lot of things that are good for tortoises to eat are also good/fine for piggies. One of the tortoise foods is cactus (opuntia cactus I think) ... and you can buy it (pesticide free) online in the UK to feed tortoises(from easy cactus http://www.easycactus.co.uk/shop/Opuntia-Cacti/). I wouldnt buy it for my piggies as there are so many, more readily available options in the UK but its interesting to read this.
