I just had a quick question :) when you talk about shredded paper for the bedding and in the cage for the piggies to play and hide in, what sort of paper ? newspaper or does the ink affect them ? normal paper ?

Sorry for the stupid question i am only new to piggies :)

Hi,First of all,you are not stupid,just a concerned owner.

Shredded newspaper is the safest,as other types of paper could contain bleach.Newspaper ink is very safe these days because it is soya based.Years ago printers ink contained a large amount of lead, but this has not been used in ink for many years now.I use flat newspaper, but iit is just personal choice whether you shred or not.

Hi Sue, I know EXACTLY what you mean!.I suppose it is more interesting than just having hay all over the floor.!.I think I will hire my lot out to local offices as full time paper shredders.

Excellent idea! I could bring Bully to work to do all the shredding!

I use shredded office paper, both of my parents are able to bring it home from work. I have never had any problems with it and have used it for about 10 years. I tried using shredded newspaper but would find that they would pee on it then sleep on it, i would wake up to find my white piggie had turned grey.

sorry to keep asking questions ! by shredded office paper what exactly do you mean ! we have a shredder at work etc but all types of paper get shredded in there, coloured paper etc ?

:) I buy a huge bag of shredded paper from one of my pet shops. One of my guineas is allegic to hay, so there is no worry with the pet shop shredded paper. :)

All the documents that contain private information, Just white printed A4 pages. My parents have placed notices on the shredders to make sure that people don't shread post its, envelopes and staples. Sometimes we end up with so many bags of it that i give a couple of bags to a friend at work for her rabbits.

with shredded paper i use newspaper for mine there get some flat and some shreadded

you can use just about anything to shred, I know someone who went out and bought a paper shredder so that she could shred her own from the papers and junk mail that she received .. if you are in doubt of the paper or the ink that is used I wouldn't use it .. but most are ok these days ..

I definately wouldn't use it as the only bedding though, as it isn't very absorbant and will smell after only a short time .. I went through a trial of using shredded paper, hay, and straw as bedding .. I think in 2 days time it was disgusting .. but shredded paper on top of your normal bedding for play they seem to love ...
