Barron my guinia pig was not eating and acting lethargic so I took her to the vet. They took an xray and we found out that she has a huge air bubble in her belly. He gave me medicine for her and instructed me to force feed her. It's been almost a day since we started her treatment and she seems to just be getting worse. She's breathing so hard you can hear it and she barely moves. I don't really know what to do. Part of me wants to keep trying and giving her her medicine and the other part says to just let her rest and spend the rest of her time as quite and as comfortable as possible. The only reason I would think to stop is she seems so uncomfortable everytime we have to force feed and administer her medicine and it doesnt seem to be working. Has anyone ever been in a situation like this?

Firstly, if Barron is getting worse and having problems breathing then she needs to see a vet again urgently, as soon as possible.

I'm not sure if you've ever syringe-fed a guinea pig before, but this guide may also be of help....

Best of luck, i hope she gets well soon

Poor girl. The heavy breathing may be because she is in pain. She does need to see a vet urgently.

Where are you based? What medication were you given?

Re the bloat, I am no expert and others on here have far more experience than me with bloat but I understand that running an electric toothbrush on the belly can help move the gas and make her more comfortable.

I really hope she improves xx

I agree, she needs to go back to the vet ASAP. Bloat can be a killer and she'll be in a lot of pain. I hope you can get her seen to.

Hi! Severe bloat can unfortunately kill; it is a nasty thing to come down with. I have lost and had to let go guinea pigs with severe bloat myself, so I know what a fight you are fighting. :(

Has your vet told you to keep vibrating and genly massaging to help shift the bloat? The handle of a cheap supermarket electric tooth brush is likely the easiest thing to get hold of.

If possible, please have her checked by a vet this evening and discuss any further steps with him. The diaphragmic breathing is very worrying. It looks like her heart may be very strained; that also ties in with the apathy.

What medication is she on?
Here are our detailed step-by-step syringe feeding tips; you have to be careful when syringe feeding a guinea pig that is rather weak. Please stop feeding if she is too weak and struggles to swallow.
