My old guinea pig has had a rough year. He has had dental work done twice this year and each time it has had complications of abscesses and weight loss. He takes at least 2 weeks each time to start eating properly and then everything goes a long fine again for a few months.

Today, he is now 4 weeks post dental op again and over the weekend he has gone down hill again. I suspect another abscess or its his teeth again as he is smelly and wet under his chin but he won't let me look properly. I have him booked in the vets later this afternoon but I am wondering if it is his teeth again should I put him through it all over again. He is 6 and a half and I know he is quite old and wonder if this is how it will now be going forward and is it fair on him. When he was really unwell earlier this year I was advised to put him to sleep by a previoius vet but after coming on this forum I got his teeth sorted properly by a vet who knew her stuff. However, I am really worried today she may advise me it is time to let go. Really upset he's unwell again but also realise it isn't fair to keep putting him through the trauma of being put under. Has anyone had a similar experience with an aging guinea pig?

I'm sorry he is so poorly. You know him best though and if you feel it is unfair to carry on then that is the right decision. If you did want to try once more though and are able to get to Northampton, the best dental vets are at the Cat and Rabbit clinic - Simon and Kim Maddock. They are usually able to do conscious dentals too.

Simon was fantastic with my Ted. He sorted his dental problem out in 10 minutes without a GA, something that my local vet did not do, in fact made him far worse than he was before he’d seen him. It was really worth the 6 hour plus drive. I’ll keep my fingers crossed for your little Piggie and hope all goes well

Not good news from the vets sadly. She has advised to put my boy to sleep. So he has had a pain killer and I have brought him home to let the family have their last cuddles. We are heartbroken, but there are more problems than his teeth are going on it now appears. He has been through a lot this year and I guess at some point you have to ask yourself whether you prolonging things for yourself because you can't let go, rather than thinking of his health and well being. So today was that day, the prognosis was bleak.
This forum has been really great for helping me this year with all of info and expertise you give. I would never have found my vet had I not had a second opinion after discussing my guineas health on here, and I know she has tried everything she was as upset as me today.

Sorry sorry for your very sad news. There comes a time when you know in your heart that that decision has to be made. So sorry for you and your family x

pts is our last act of love for our piggies, it is so easy to hold on to them longer, but knowing they are too poorly to get better, and they need to go over the rainbow bridge and we need to help them get there.💔💗hugs for you at this very hard time.X
