Hi, I have a guinea pig named snoopy who’s about 5 years old. I got home from work earlier and noticed he hadn’t drank or eaten anything and he was fine the day before but his back leg seemed to bother him and he won’t walk and he also sounds like he’s wheezing when he breathes. I called my vet and she said all of the exotic animal vets already left and I’d have to wait until tomorrow to see someone. I got him to drink a little water from a bowl and he took a tiny bite from a green bean and won’t eat anything else. He seems to have a little more energy than before but not much more. Does anyone know what could be wrong or what else I could do? I feel awful I can’t get him seen until tomorrow

Try to make sure there is nothing caught in his throat as I'm guessing it would after a while leat to a lack of oxygen, I would definitely try to syringe feed him as well while keeping him warm and if there are any 24hr/ late night vet clinics or services still open I would suggest giving them a call and describing the situation so that they might be able to give you some idea of what the problem is and what to to because in all honesty there are bucket loads of things that could cause such a problem

Thank you, I syringe fed him and he seems to be more alert. I was on the phone with the receptionist crying and asking if anyone could see him and she basically just told me I had to wait until tomorrow to try and get an appintment and I’m not sure of any other vets near me who take guinea pigs. I’m from the US Worcester area. I believe there’s a hospital around 45 minutes away from me but I just lost my job a couple days ago and don’t really have the funds at the moment for big vet bills and my parents said they’d help me pay for it but they didn’t want to drive that far that late so I just don’t know what else to do until I can call the vet again tomorrow and try to convince them to take me but thankfully they open at 7:30 am.

Yea i know but if anyone asked if the pig is getting vit c . Could help until the vets have a look. New born pup tells me they could not know

Thank you everyone for trying to help. I took him to the vet as soon as i could today but unfortunately they said he had an upper respiratory infection and at that point it was really bad and deep in his lungs and said I could try to give him medication and feed him special food but his chances were very very slim of living even after that. It was an incredibly hard decision to make but I didn’t want him to suffer anymore so I decided to put him down.

I am so sorry for your loss.
Allowing a sick piggy to be pts is the last gift of love we give them but it breaks our hearts too.
Look after yourself and take time to grieve

I agree with everything Merab'slave said. I don't know if you have anymore piggies, but I'd change that vet, report that receptionist. What a good mum you are for Snoopy to reach 5.
I'm so sorry for your loss. Sleep tight little Snoopy.
When you feel like it you may want to leave a tribute to Snoopy on our Rainbow bridge page.
