Hi, I have a sick guinea pig, and the vets nearest where I live won't see them, I live in a very rural area with no close vets, I suspect he has a UTI (urinary track infection), he isn't moving around much, and isn't making any noise anymore when normally hes pretty vocal, lately though we noticed he was being very vocal when peeing, and we determined it is probably a UTI, though as I said, for the past few days he hasn't made a noise at all. He will get up for water and is very wobbly and seems to be weak. I feel really bad for him and I am wondering if there is anything I can do to help the guinea pig at home?

Sorry he's definitely in need of vet care. Is he eating/pooing? Is there blood in his urine? I'd suggest supplementing him with critical care or mushing pellets in hot water (let it cool) and then syringe feeding him if he's weak, it probably mean he's not eating enough due to the pain.

It could be a UTI but it could also be bladder stones so it's important to see a vet. Where are you based? Someone may be able to help recommend a vets that will help :)

Hi! Unfortunately your guinea pig has either got a URI, which requires an antibiotic, or he has got a bladder stone that may have got stuck in the urethra and requires an operation. Unfortunately there is no home care for either problem and they require both vet access. They won't go away on their own. Both issues are extremely painful; a stuck bladder stone can kill, especially if it cuts off the urine flow.

Can the vet who is not willing to see a guinea pig refer you to another vet or can you google for another vet that you can reach?

Please start to syringe feed your guinea pig; the pain will reduce or totally kill its appetite and eventually stop the guts from working. Also make sure that you offer it as much water as possible. You can make up syringe feed from pellets that you soak in a bit of water until you have the right consistency. Please control the food intake by weighing daily at the same time.
Our guide will take you through all aspects step by step. Please note that this is just to keep your guinea pig alive until it can be seen and any treatment can kick in.

As difficult as it is, your piggy does need to see a vet as he may be in pain. Sounds like a road trip! X
