I have a one and a half year old female, Minnie. I knew something was wrong on Monday when I came home from work and she was sitting in a hunched position and her coat was puffed out. She was noticeably heavier and very bloated. She was not excited to see me like normal and sat still in the corner. I immediately took her to the vet and had her looked at. They took x-rays and said that her colon, stomach, and intestines were filled with feces and gas. They gave her shots of fluids and pain meds. She was also given oral meds Metacam (once a day) for pain and Metronidazole (twice a day) for an antibiotic. I did not feed her by direction of the vet on Monday night and watched to make sure that she was pooping. She had pooped a little but not as much as normal. Some poops were normal and others oddly shaped. Tuesday morning I took her back to the vet for a pain shot as directed. I took her home, made her comfortable, hand fed her spinach and hay, and waited for poops. The poops did not come. I hand fed water during the day. She has periodically been drinking water on her own as well. At 500 on Tuesday night with 8 hours of no poop, back to the vet we went. As soon as I pulled her out of the carrier she pooped all over the table. No diarrhea, good solid poops, some oddly shaped. She was not bloated and walking around normally. I explained to the vet that I am not a crazy person and told him before we went there she had no pooped at all. Minnie continued to prove me wrong and poop for the entire vet visit. The vet asked about her eating and I told him she will eat hand fed spinach and hay but does not touch the other veggies and pellets that I put in her cage. The vet explained that the pain meds may be causing her to act strangely. The vet said that she looks fine and sent me home with Critical care to be given ever 8 hours to get nutrients back into her system. I have also been periodically massaging her tummy and taking her for walks around the house, in which she does follow me like normal. I have been putting a warm compress on her butt in an attempt to relax the area. Tuesday night started the Critical care and the poops came nicely, not as much as normal, but they were there. Wednesday not much pooping and more Critical Care in the morning and at night. Now I am at Thursday morning and from 800 last night to 830 this morning, no poops. She has been given Critical Care, hand fed spinach, and is drinking water on her own, but still 12 hours with no poop. She has not been walking around her cage like normal or jumping up to see me this entire time. I don't know what to do. Should I take her back to the vet? She is ready for another does of Critical Care, but should I continue to feed it to her even though there are no poops? Will I overload her gut? Should I wait more to see if she poops.. but how long do I wait? Is the antibiotic too much for her and make her worse? I am emotionally drained and an absolute mess. Please help.

I don't have any experience with bloat, I'm afraid, so am hesitant to offer advice. Twelve hours without poos certainly warrants an urgent vet visit though, in my opinion. I would also stop the spinach, in case that's the cause of the bloating in the first place.

Just as an aside thought, could the car journey have helped with the poos last time? I've read that vibrations can help with gut movement and gas, and some members have suggested taking pigs for a car journey to help.

I think you should definitely ring your vet straight away to update them on the situation and take Minnie in for another gut stimulant, if required.

I just looked and there are two very small poops in the cage, not enough for a 12 hour period. I downloaded and app on my phone to where it constantly vibrates which I sat her on to try and loosen her tummy up. I am going to call and make the appointment to bring her in today. Do you think I should still give her to dose of Critical Care that she is due for?

Hello,

Sorry your piggie is poorly. If a piggie has bloat as the x-rays seem to have confirmed, take her off veggies. Just feed hay and pellets, if she is not eating on her own you will, as you are currently doing need to sryinge feed her critical care, please aim for 120ml over 24 hours.

Please visit your vet again as bloat is a very serious condition and can be difficult to treat. Massage her tummy at the sides gently this will help move the gas, please ask your vet for some Metachlopromide it can be known as Emeprid or Reglan in the USA - this is a gut stimulant and is given at home up to 3 times a day, it helps push everything through and as long as piggie isn't obstructed can help bloat, our piggie gets bloaty episodes and we always have some on hand. I would certainly see the vet again.

I hope your piggie recovers soon.
