Hi! My guinea pig fell really ill yesterday he can’t walk, he just tries to shuffle? he won’t eat he’s just sleeping. I had him to the vets today and the vet seemed a bit stumped there’s no sign on infection or anything. So he’s had some pain relief and something to help with his digestive system. He’s had 0.03ml of meloxaid and 0.09ml (I think, it says 0.09x ) of emeprid. I have an appointment on Tuesday it seems a bit far away considering they never gave us any pain relief to take home. He doesn’t really seem any better he’s just sleeping. She also told me to blend his food up to make sure he’s getting enough vitamin c and get him some supplements. He’s had a few syringes of green peppers and spring greens. Is there any else I can do for him? His brother seems a bit stressed too he hasn’t eaten today but is still bright so I think it might just be stress? Hopefully.

Also yesterday I did hear some rumbling like gas in his stomach. His poop is really small too but it’s firm.

There’s 3 vets near me one them didn’t deal with my rats properly, there’s one I haven’t tried that’s a bit out the way but I got recommended them a while ago for dealing with exotics. The only one I know of for exotics is Holly house in leeds unfortunately it’s too out the way and I don’t drive. I’d have to get a train which would take an hour or so then multiple buses and I don’t want to put him through that.

Your piggy sounds to be quite poorly and I agree, this vet doesn’t seem to be very knowledgeable. You do need to find a specialist vet and get him some proper help. Has your piggy maybe fallen and could that be how he has come to not be able to walk? Whatever has happened, you need to get him help, pain relief and correct treatment.

Blending pepper and spring greens isn’t enough. A piggy who isn’t eating needs to be syringe fed a fibre rich food - either recovery food (critical care) or mushed up pellets.

I’m going to see how he goes over night and if he’s any worse tomorrow I will try get him in to a better vet asap. I did notice some white discharge/fluid on his eyes and nose a few hours ago could that be a sign of a respiratory infection or some sort of infection? He’s bucked up a bit he’s eating on his own and walking around a bit better. I have been syringe feeding him I’ll try him with mushed you pellets before bed. What’s the best kind of recovery food? I don’t think I’ll bother with the appointment on Tuesday and just find a better vet for him.

It’s not possible to say what the fluid on his eyes is with certainty - only a hands on check can do that. They do have a fluid which they use to clean themselves with though so it could be that, but we can’t confirm that.

Good that he is eating and moving a bit more but do bear in mind that it could just be the pain relief making him feel a bit better for now so keep an eye on him. Mushed up pellets work perfectly well in place of recovery food but some of the recovery foods are Oxbow critical care or supreme selective recovery.

You need to get to the bottom of what this is though so definitely do look for a more knowledgeable vet

Please do t wait until he is better. I would take him as soon as you can, even if the vet is far away. Switch to weighing him daily as well now, rather than weekly.

That’s what I thought it was but I just thought it was strange coming out of his nose. I’m keeping a very close eye on him because I know how fast they can deteriorate. I'm going to try the one I got recommended a while ago. I don’t know my way around Leeds and I really don’t want to be carrying him around in a busy environment on public transport, if it comes to that I will. I’ll try him with mushed pellets tonight. Thank you for your replies.

Hope your piggy is better soon. I swear by emeraid critical care which you can get online, I have found it easier to feed than some of the others due to the smoother texture but any of the critical care foods are better than nothing. Keep us posted x

I'd advise going to one of the recommended vets on here if there's one you can get to even if it means travelling on trains etc.I think Holly House is recommended on here. Guinea pigs travel very well. When I've had to take one of mine who is poorly, I take some herbs, cucumber for hydration and a bit of critical care in a small beaker to syringe feed on the bus.

Could you post a link to any recommended vets please to see if there are any closer ones. :) I’ll have to see if there’s an easier way to get there I have a bit of anxiety when it comes to traveling and I’m sure I can book at taxi to leeds easily.
