Hello

Any help would be very much appreciated, I have a guinea mia who is around 5 years old, around 2 weeks ago i noticed she was forming alot of crust around her eyes but was still very active, eating and drinking normally, after a couple of days she formed a croak so instantly i booked her into the local vets who prescribed me with baytril 0.2ml every 12 hours i had done alot of research so i knew this was a good anti biotic, i did as advised and gave her meds day and night and made sure she was still eating, i had her booked in the vets the week after for a check up, she was still croaky and lethargic, but all the crust had gone from her eyes.

I took her back last Friday and was told to carry on with the baytril for a further 2 weeks so in total would be 3 weeks on meds next Friday, i was told to give her the same 0.2ml every 12 hours but was given a stronger dose, ive been giving her this day and night but the croaking has increased, shes been on the stronger meds for 7 days now and I'm slightly worried as i should of seen signs of improvement, shes still eating but is not as big as she usually is, she normally never stops and you could never feel any bone before.

I'm worried shes built a resistance to the meds however i cant be sure, should i carry on with the meds and see if she improves within the next week or take her to a more knowledgeable vet?

Thanks

Becci.

I would definitely seek a second opinion, even if it's just to put your mind at rest that you're doing the best for her. Hope she gets well soon. :)

Well worth another vets visit. Baytril isn't the only antibiotic used for URI's another one is Zithromax. It may be worth speaking the the vet about a diuretic called furosemide. If there is any fluid on her lungs this will help reduce it.

Antibiotics can be harsh on piggies tummys so it can be worth getting a pro biotic such as Avipro plus, this will encourage the good bacteria in the piggies tummy that the antibiotics will have killed off.

Hope Mia feels better soon.

thanks for the advice i'll get her a probiotic when i finish work. hopefully will help,

If no improvement will ask my vet for other safe alternatives :).

Thanks
