Hello! My name is Dominique and I am a new Guniea Pig Mom.
My family nor I never had a piggie, but it’s the only type of pet other than a goldfish my landlord allows.
Her name is Pearl and she is just the sweetest little thing. She’ll let you pet her all day, but she has been going though a few health issues and would love some advice.
About 3 weeks ago my boyfriend saw that she had mites and we took her to the vet and she was given 2 shots of mite treatment and was put on an antibiotic. We seemed to be in the clear but then she “bit” off two of her nails. There was no blood but it was infected and she was given Gabapentin for the pain but I was wondering if anyone else has gone through this? I love the little girl to peices and don’t want anything bad to happen to her

To clarify, she chewed off the nail herself?
Does she have piggie companion? Guinea pigs are not designed to live alone.

Have the mites cleared now ? How are her nails looking now ? I would hope that, if this happened 3 weeks ago, the nails are starting to grow back.

I can’t stress the importance of guinea pigs having companionship. It’s like putting a human in solitary confinement - that’s actually punishment. Same for pigs. Stress causes illness in both humans and pigs. Have never heard of a pig biting off it’s own nails before, over grooming through boredom yes - nails: no.
