Good morning,

I noticed yesterday the kids GP wasn't feeling well. Hadn't eaten or drank water since maybe Thursday. Also could tell he wasn't pooping much (his cage was too clean!). Rushed him to the vet, they checked him. He had one very small poop at the vet. I opted to give him fluids and they sent me home with critical care, which I am syringe feeding, and some pain meds. But this morning he is fluffed up again and has only had 1 small poop after 2 syringe feedings. Any ideas on how long it takes before they start pooping after taking CC? He has peed. Kids are worried and Mom is doing what she can to get him to pull through. Any other ideas? Thanks

Sounds like he may be suffering with bloat at a guess. This stops them from pooing as they are filled with gas. I would get him back to the vet to ask about this possibility. Did the vet give him a gut stimulant such as metachlpromide or emeprid. They can give you this to give at home. Did they check your little ones stomach at all? Another possibility could be an obstruction, but you have seen poo so that is a good sign against that

You need to be syringe feeding regular and giving him a little water too. Have a read of our guide here Complete Syringe Feeding Guide

Please take him back to the vets today if that is possible. Is he bloated or is his fur coat fluffed up (i.e. he is in acute pain)? He can do with a painkiller (metacam) and gut stimulation drugs like emeprid/metoclopramide (works on the stomach) and zantac (works on the guts). If he is bloated, gripe water from the supermarket can help additionally with breaking gas bubbles, but it won't do the trick with severe bloat.
If the out-of-hours vets give injections, please ask what is in any of them. Refuse any steroids; they slow down organs in rodents and are not recommended for internal use. General vets are not necessarily aware of that.

Please continue to go give him CC or CC mixed with mushed up pellets, little but often round the clock, as well as water. He needs about 40-60ml in 24 hours to prevent the guts from slowing and then closing down. It is going to be tough, but your round the clock care is as important as any medical care. Have him seen by piggy savvy vet as soon as you can tomorrow.

The current poo output reflects the food intake of the last couple of days when virtually nothing has gone in. You should hopefully seeing more coming through as more feed is going in, but you have to brace yourself that it may take yet a bit longer. As long as he is still taking on food and water, his guts are still working, if slowly.

See a vet at any time asap if your piggy is becoming lethargic; that is a life and death emergency.

All the best!

Thank you - this is very helpful. We'll continue feed. He is definitely more alert today. The vet he did see yesterday was familiar with guinea pigs at least. Recommends X-rays and bloodwork (lots of $$$) for our next round if he's not on the mend by tomorrow.
