Aww, hope her piggy is ok.. Like someone said vicks and Baytril are good and highly recommended.

Sorry I can't be of any help in the finding a good vet/rodentologist in Brum area.

If she phones or texts Vedra they will tell her number is 07721026401

hi guys-the lady is me! thankyou ever so much for starting this thread Deb, and to everyone who replied.

i have just told Deb that I'm pretty sure it isnt his teeth we are dealing with now as i heard him wheezing not too long ago :-\so as soon as i know which vet to contact i shall get him booked in.

i gave him baytril last night and this morning, and he is being really good about taking it. also bought some garlic oil capsules today and squirted one of those in his mouth and I'm pretty sure he liked it! so thats good. i have also put a probiotic in his drinking water, though I'm not 100% sure if hes drinking, so i will syringe some water into him later just to be sure.

its the first time i have ever had to deal with a sick piggie(though ive had to deal with ALOT of other sick rodents unfortunately) and it is quite scarey-my poor boy. he is still running around happily at free range time though so i suppose thats something?

i shall keep you all updated on his progress-thanks again!

Hi Belinda, welcome to the forum :)

It's good that he's still running around! Have you tried Vick?

If he doesn't drink much then it's no big deal, just give him some extra cucumber cos they get plenty of water from that.

Deb has been passing on stuff from me all day bless her! Stupid job!

I have PMed you direct Belinda

Thankyou so much guys. I'm happy to report that Budd has eaten a little bit of food! so atleast we know he is eating, even if it isnt as much as usual. hes had a little spring greens, cucumber and a tiny bit of apple and orange.

i now know which vets to be calling so shall make an appintment tomorrow-though i dont think il be able to get him there until wednesday as i need to go to my normal vets tomorrow with a very poorly rattie who needs to be put to sleep :'(he has had a brain tumour for several weeks now, and though it has been controlled this far by steroids, it finally got the better of him a couple of days ago and he now has very little quality of life :'(it will be very emotional as he will be the first rat i have had pts whilst i was there(one was pts whilst having an operation once a brain tumour was discovered) and we have had him in our lives for 2 years :'(sorry to go on guys.

yes, i gave Budd some vicks too and think that made him more comfortable. i shall keep you all updated on how he is and try and get piccies of my beautiful boys on here ASAP!

Awww, it's good to hear that he is picking up a little.

Big hugs about your rat.. not a nice thing to happen.

Thankyou once again guys. he seems the same today-wondering about when free ranging and seems happy to do so, also been absolutely fine having his meds. i was reading the peter gurney page and had a feel around his mouth to see if he'd flinch because of his teeth, but he was fine, dont suppose that proves too much though! also tried to have a look in his mouth as it mentioned that his tongue might be sore? his tongue is absolutely fine though-nice and pink and wet ;D

one thing i was wondering-if it was just resp problems, would he be drooling? this is still a problem. i know sometimes when ratties get sick they can get fluid on the lungs and this causes them to drool a little, i wondered if it was the same for piggies?

I'm hoping to get him to the vets tomorrow so shall let you know what they say!

Sounds more like respiratory problems. Are you sure he's drooling from his mouth? (Don't mean to make you out to be wrong)

When my Tonn had a cold sometime ago his nose was very, very wet and often looked like he was drooling too.

Thanks for that, yes its definately drooling from his mouth I'm afraid-his chin is soaking the poor fella! plus when I'm doing his meds and when i checked his mouth i could actually feel him drooling a little bit :-\

Oh poor love.. does it happen to be on his chest too? If you listen closely enough you should be able to tell if he's wheezy?

sorry kelly-yes he does appear to be wheezing I'm afraid. he only seems to be wet under his chin though :-\

ive finally managed to get him in for an apppointment for tomorrow morning-had hoped to get him in sooner but have had so much on the past couple of days on top of not feeling well!

he doesnt appear to have gotten any better I'm afraid-though he hasnt gotten any worse which i guess is good. i have had him on baytril twice a day now since sunday so I'm really disappointed that it doesnt seemed to have really helped-should i ask for a different anti biotic to try when I'm there tomorrow? surely i would have seen an improvement by now if the baytril was going to work?

i have also been giving him sudafed once a day, a garlic capsule once a day(piercing the capsule and squirting the liquid in his mouth) and putting vicks on his nose. he isnt eating very much and as far as i can tell he doesnt seem to be drinking at all. i have the boys in a 2 storey C&C cage and Budd has spent the past few days on the second level where there isnt a water bottle-and i dont think he has been down to the bottom level unless he is fooling us! i have been syringing him some water though, and he is eating a little bit of veg when we give it. he hasnt pooped a whole lot either and there seems to be mucus in with the tiny poops he is doing-poor boy. i checked the poops for worms etc just incase but cant see anything so I'm assuming this is just because his guts arent working properly because of lack of eating :'(

is there anything the vet can do to maybe boost his appetite? is there any food i can get that can be "force fed"? i think someone mentioned something like critical care? i do have something called "Dr Squiggles-Polyaid" which is basically for small animals that arent eating to stop them from starving. you mix the powder with some water and then syringe feed it to them-think that might be worth a try for him? I'm so worried about my boy :'(

is there any paticular anti biotic i should ask for? and at any paticular dose? anything else i might ask for while I'm there? really appreciate any help or advice given.

He sounds like a really poorly chappie.

Sudafed can make some piggies drowsy if taken with Baytril. How much Baytril are you giving him?

I would start that food you have for him now, else he's gonna go downhill quicker if he has no food inside him. Metatone Tonic can also boost him up, but you don't really want to give him now while he's on all the others.

Do you happen to have an inhaler? I mean a blue one for asthma. In the past when Jin (RIP) was a bit wheezy I sprayed some and he breathed it in.

do you mean a ventolin inhaler? i actually got one last week from the docs as it seems my asthmas comming back-how wierd is that! i shall give it a try with him then. and also give him some polyaid now too. i really hope the vet can do something different for him tomorrow-i dont want to end up being told to just continue with baytril because that isnt good enough!

yeah, the blue relief one. Mine has come back recently (a couple of months ago) and is here to stay again!

Hope the vet gives you some good news love, is it a specialist/excellent vet? If they are that good, they should be able to help more.

Fingers crossed it all goes well love.
