Hi
I need help again. My piggy fully recovered from a mystery illness but is now sick again. She's making a very loud strange noise. It's difficult to explain but it's like a deep purr/grunting noise. I took her to vet yesterday that said she could here a rattle but disappeared when she calmed down. They prescribed antibiotics but haven't worked yet. Only on 1ml once a day I know she's only had 2 doses but I'm worried as no better.
Any advise please x

oh bless,so sorry to hear your piggies not well,
is it just the rattling noise or has she any other symptoms? sorry i'm no expert, but perhaps one of the others on here can give some advice if they have some more symptoms to guide them, might help?

One of my previous girls used to suffer from 'cold like' symptoms, she sounded a bit rattley & used to get a slightly 'snotty nose' i used to put a cloth with a couple of drops of olbus oil on about a foot away from the hutch, (out of reach) this used to help her. But your girly maybe completely different. keep her comfortably warm & out of draughts...just in case.

.hope one of the experts can come up with something

fingers & paws crossed for her & a hug for you. -x-

Hi
She doesn't seem as bright today. Came on overnight. Sounds like a blocked nose or wheezing. I've never heard this noise before. I was hoping antibiotics would have kicked in but it's definitely her breathing.

Sorry to hear your piggie is poorly. What antibiotics has she been prescribed and when did you start the course?

Hi
She's been prescribed baytril had 1mg yesterday and same today. No improvement at all but is it too early to expect. Can I give more than 1 dose a day?

Do you mean 1ml? Was that undiluted? Please don't increase any dosage without speaking to your vet as if it is 1ml that does sound like a high dose of Baytril. We have normally have been given Baytril in a region of 0.2ml - 0.35ml twice a day depending on what infection it is treating.

Normally Antibiotics take a couple of days to kick in. If your piggie is getting worse then i would get them back to the vet

I agree with sport billy, i am sure 1ml is not unheard of, but it does sound very high and in all my years on this forum i have never heard of it, at the very most i was prescribed 2 x 0.4mls a day and even that was very high, please double check with your vet the dosage is correct, too much could be doing more harm than good.

I do wish your little piggie well though, if the noise is what i think you are explaining, i have a "special girl" who made this noise a while back and within 24 hours it sorted itself, but i was still given a precautionary course of AB's for her and the other piggies, the same "special piggy" had it again recently and with another course of AB's it was gone within 48 hours.

xx

a few months ago Jamie suddenly started making this strange noise when he was breathing.....a bit like a soft quiet hooting noise....took him to vet and couldnt find anything obviously wrong with him. He gave him baytril which I used for 24 hours, and then the noise disappeared.

The only thing I could think of was that a piece of hay or a hay seed had got stuck up his nose...hes been perfectly fine since

Hope your piggy is ok today

I would take her back to the vets, it is possible she has fluid on her lungs so she may need a diuretic to remove the fluid as well as the antibiotic.

Hi
This morning she sounded better but I've just got home and noise is back. I've checked bottle and def 1ml daily mixed with equal parts fluid. The vet weighed her and prescribed dose on weight so assume correct. She ate quite a lot of hey this morning but not much since.

Hi
She sounded better this morning but not now. I've checked bottle def 1ml mixed with equal parts juice/water. The vet weighed her then prescribed this dose. Hope she improved soon. She did eat hey this morning and I've just fed her critical care with some probiotic C. Hope I'm doing right things.

Did you check the bottle or check with the vet? It does sound like an unusually high dose. The thing is with medications such as that (and it's the same with humans) - if we are prescribed too much of it, it can actually make us worse rather than better. I would, if you could, give the vets a call as soon as you can (most vets have an emergency option when you ring the number) so they can just check it wasn't a wrong dosage level given out. There will be records.

I checked bottle. My piggie weights 1kilo not sure if that's an average weight or not. Someone who was at the vets the same time said she was big. Just wondering if that's why dose high.

Hi
Just thought I would update you. The awful noise has stopped today thank god. She's not very socialable but her eyes are bright. If food is put in her house like hay and celery she will it but will not come out at the moment. Hopefully she's on the mend. Still giving her a little critical care with pro biotic c

Aw, poor baby :( She sounds as though she is in good hands with you, we worry ourselves so much when they're not well as many of us can vouch for :)
It does take a few days for ABX to kick in and I have a little girl who suffered pneumonia last year much to my horror and though she was tiny, was prescribed 0.5ml of Baytril for 2 weeks which I thought was high for such a tiny girl. It did the trick thankfully :)
Healing vibes sent from us here to your girl and hugs to you x

So I gave her antibiotics for 8 days and it would seem as though the noise is coming back. Not as bad and not as loud and she's eating. I've still got annuities left. She's very stressed at vets. Doesn't eat for days so have to give her critical feed. Should I re start antibiotics? X
