Hi all!

My baby piggie isn't the best today,he has a bit of a sniffle and he is coughing a good bit but not sneezing at all.
I was wondering if this sounds like an URI or could it be something different, my other pigs have had URI's before but it was sneezing, runny nose and snuffles!
He is an indoor piggie, but it has been quite cold lately, and if the heating is not on it can be quite cold inside!

Any ideas would be appreciated!

Thank you x

We have had some huge variations in temperature/weather recently both between days and bewtween day and night. This has been a bit of an "environmental shock" to our piggies and they are more susceptible to picking up infection so please everyone be vigilant and ensure your piggies are able to keep warm enough.

There are quite a few cases of piggies showing "not quite obvious" signs of respiratory infection on the forum at the moment, but given that other symptoms include gut involvement, lethargy, fluffed up fur and even some with hind leg twitches....there is clearly some bug doing the rounds

I myself have just spent the last two weeks nursing one piggie through a serious episode showing all the previous symptoms and now have 3 more with suspected infection that have developed over the last 48 hour.s. Their symptoms are coughing, some with nasal or clicking sounds in their noseor when they are picked up, all are much less active, sitting in one place with fluffed up fur, and slightly loose poos - yet they are still eating normally. They also have very hot ears. My vet and I are monitoring the situation very closely and all those showing symptoms are now on septrin NOT baytril (as baytril didn;t work on my first piggie that was ill)

Although he doesn;t have the classic URI symptoms, in light of the above I would suggest that you take your piggie in to the vet and hopefully get some antibiotics - I would be inclined to ask for septrin rather than baytril...baytrl has been used for so long now that many bugs have developed resistance and in fact my vet will no longer prescribe it for my piggies as the last culture we did came back positive for baytril-resistant bugs.

I was thinking aswell, when he eats his neck gets very wet sometimes and may go the colour of what ever he is eating!so imagine if thats wet and its getting cold!:(
His ears felt warm last night, but they dont now...I am taking him to the vet as soon as i finish work today!
Thank you so much for your info and your replies! xx

I got my little guy to the vets and he is on baytril

I was just wondering is there anything I can give him to sooth his throat,he is still coughing and I think its hurting his throat

Thanks x

Oh poor little baby. If your room is quite cold can he be moved to a warmer room? You describe it as rather chilly and this will not help him to recover at all.
