Sick Piggy..again

Well, we returned from our holiday Tuesday last week (5 days in Singapore and then 2 weeks in Manila for my brother's wedding), and when we picked up the piggies from the boarding, Cookie doesn't seem right. I ask the boarder to weigh my piggies everyday to know they are eating and if they settled fine. Anyway, all of them lost some weight, which is normal because they are not as spoiled as when they are in our house. But I notice Cookie was losing her weight gradually (Prince and Sierra would have days down and then some would have days up to their regular weight). It didn't really concern me that much though coz her weight was still around 1220g the day before we picked them up (she was 1366g when we dropped them off). When we got home, I weighed Prince (1050g from 1160 3 weeks before, he's due for his dental this week anyway) and Sierra (1220g from 1280g 3 weeks before). When I weighed Cookie, she was down to 1065g from 1220g the day before! So off I go make CC and fed her. We definitely know she's sick because she was refusing CC, which she has always loved when she was well. We managed to get her weight back up to 1150g the following morning. But we noticed she was chewing very slow, so it's a dental problem. Prince was booked to see Simon on Monday (today) but when we called to fit in Cookie, they can't fit her in coz they are fully booked. So we have to settle to go on Thursday (this week) this week for her and Prince to be seen.

But on Wednesday late afternoon (last week) Cookie became worse and very uncomfortable. She was getting a bit of head tilt as well. So we booked to our local Vets4Pets for her teeth to be seen the following morning. They managed to trim her back teeth but the vet said that it was really smelly inside her mouth (which I smelled the day before). So they prescribed her Baytril just in case there's an infection. Over the weekend, she was fine and eating a lot, not by herself most of the time but she eats whenever she's on our lap for feeding time. She even chews fast the grass and hay we feed her so we know the dental helped her. But last night, I noticed there's a big lump in her neck. She wasn't bothered by it though coz after I fed her she was eating loads of grass before I went to bed. This morning, hubby noticed she was really uncomfortable again during her feeding time and is starting to tilt her head again. So he moved the appointment to Simon on Wednesday morning instead. He changed it before I managed to tell him about her lump when I woke up. But when we called Cat & Rabbit again, they really can't fit us earlier anymore coz it's full. We searched for a recommended vets and we found the Cheshire Pet. I called them this afternoon and they managed to book us to see Kristina Hunter tomorrow at 10:30am. Hopefully she will get sorted by tomorrow. The lump is getting bigger and Cookie's really uncomfortable. Hubby gave her a very small dose of tramadol along with the loxicom and it helped her. She started walking around the cage again and started having nibbles of food tonight.

My piggies always give us a fright everytime we go on our holiday. We will have another holiday in 6 weeks for 2 weeks and we hope everything is sorted by then so we won't have any problems when they stay in the boarding again.
 
Thank you. We are back home for an hour and just waiting for some news. Kristina Hunter was very nice, and she even asked if I knew of Cocoa @David Pet Lover :D. I said yeah, she was quite popular in the forum. Kristina looked at the big lump and she suspects it is an abscess, but she was surprised how big it is. It was actually quite the same thing we think of what Prince had around September last year that Simon removed. Flipping same area as well (in the neck just below the jaw). We are still going to see Simon for Prince tomorrow and it's another very early and long day for us. We will meet up with @furryfriends (TEAS) tomorrow hopefully! :D Oh and hubby being the comic Scouser, he made Kristina's day for making her laugh a lot (that's what she said)! :lol!:
 
It's lovely Kristina mentioned Cocoa. I can't fault the love and extra few months I had with Cocoa because of Cocoa brave fight and Chesire Pets.
Kristina is great and i wish you and Cookie and all your piggies the best . .

Oh poor you. I do hope both Cookie and Prince get better soon. Sending healing vibes. 💕
 
We're on our way home from the vets. As expected, it was abscess, but it was so big and too much and some of it was attached to an artery (no wonder she gone downhill overnight and was so uncomfortable). Kristina marsupialised it instead of removing the whole thing in one. Just like what happened to Prince. Cookie was prescribed Septrin for antibiotics, Metacam and Zantac for the guts. We also need to do the flushing and hopefully this will get sorted by the antibiotics. Prince's abscess haven't returned so fingers crossed Cookie's won't as well. Tomorrow it'll be Prince's turn to see the vet. So 2 out of 3 piggies for syringe feeding. Prince takes his time eating normal whenever we go for a dental at Simon's so I had to top him up with CC for a few days.
 
Oh poor you, and a long journey too. We go to see Simon to with our Ted every 3 months, I hate the journey but there’s no one down in Cornwall who do conscious dentals x

Thank you. We never go anywhere else if it's dental. Simon will always be the 1st choice unless it's really an emergency, like last week with Cookie when she needed her teeth done right away.

Today's experience with Kristina Hunter in Cheshire Pet is really a positive one though. She is very good and very knowledgeable. She also knows/heard of Simon. Now we have a better option near us that we can go to for an emergency treatment.

Yes that’s great to find a good vet nearer you that you can trust. This is what we need to find, unfortunately Ted had a disastrous dental with GA at our local vet and couldn’t eat by himself for about 6 weeks. We managed to find out about Simon from this forum and took him for a conscious dental and he was eating hay within 10 minutes after. It was amazing as we were beginning to think he would have to be PTS. His incisors where cut so short they didn’t meet, plus the back teeth had not been done correctly at all. He has one pre molar that’s either split or has a strange peg tooth next to it, weird?

We’ll probably be back up in May, dread the journey and overnight stay! traffic fine until you get off the M4 then a nightmare all the way up to Northampton haha
 
The problem with Prince is his back teeth seem to be loose and Simon says there's also some few bits and pieces that cracks. He doesn't think the problem started because of the massive abscess he had in the past. So it might be genetic. So we go monthly for dental.

Hubby will always try to avoid Birmingham and go via Leicester because of awful traffic. The things we do for our piggies eh?! 😂😂
 
Yes, we must be crackers! I do wish I was nearer, we aren’t really used to traffic down hear in Cornwall, well apart from 6 week hols, then it’s a car park!

Hope Prince is fine tomorrow x Be brave little piggie x
 
We're back from our long journey from Northampton. Prince had his dental and Simon said it wasn't bad considering his last appointment was 6 weeks ago. But he said there was a very small bump in his right jaw which was probably caused by the abscess that was removed, hence his dental problems.

Sierra had a checkup as well. Simon said her left eye that looks like a cherry eye was in fact early signs of conjunctivitis. So she was prescribed Isathal and hopefully it settles down.

Simon also looked at Cookie's teeth. He said her teeth were good overall, apart from the right bottom back teeth was slanting because of the abscess that was removed yesterday. What are the odds that Prince and Cookie would have the exact same problem?!?!

Here she is after 24hrs of operation.

Aw poor little Cookie, these dental problems are horrible, not just the fact they can’t eat, it’s the abscesses and sore gums too. Hope she recovers well x

Glad Prince was ok though, let’s hope he can go for 6 weeks again. It’s probably the infection of the abscess that made his teeth wobbly? Poor piggies x

That's what Simon said, that the abscess might have caused it. Although his teeth was quite different already when we adopted him Feb last year. The bottom front teeth had a tiny gap in the middle and the tips were so closed together. He broke one of those bottom teeth around October last year and it hasn't grown back. His abscess problem started in September.
 
Oh dear poor little guy x Bill broke one of his incisors last year, it did grow back. He has had to have it filed down the last time we went with Ted as it has grown back rather “fat”. His incisors are very uneven now but his back teeth are prefect. Ted is the opposite, beautiful incisors but one dodgy pre molar! This goes to show that uneven incisors dosen’t mean problem back teeth and vice versa. Simon says if we had the good bits from each piggie we would have a prefect set of teeth haha!
 
Cookie is still not better. 😞 Her wound stinks so much. Hubby had to take her back to the vets this morning and vet told him that the wound is infected. Nothing was prescribed for that (she's taking zithromax anyway), just been told that we needed to be aggressive in flushing it. I feel so sorry for Cookie. She hates being syringe fed now (it's been 2 weeks of syringe feeding) but she needs it since she barely eats by herself (she eats when she's on our lap though). I can't wait for her to get better, so the torture for her would end, and so the stinky smell would disappear too. 🤢🤮
 
I'm so sorry, totally missed this @anyar.dris, what a bloody nightmare you've been having recently. Know that smell, horrible! :vom:

I know. 🤢🤮 I wanted to cuddle her as much but dang that smell sticks to your clothes..and her hair! Her hair is everywhere! I've given up hoovering! 😂

Hubby and I are flushing her wound 3x a day now. It really is so big and deep. I feel so sorry for her every time coz she keeps on crying while I was holding her. But I really just wish she would start eating by herself. That would make everything better for her so we can lessen or stop syringe feeding her. She hates it too much now. But we are managing her weight. She is around 1150 to 1180 g. It was good that she had loads of reserves when this all started.
 
I know, it really is nasty but it's hard to stop the cuddles, then you get it on your arm or your face and :vom:

Bless her. You feel so mean doing the flushes and things, especially when they cry and tell you off! But hopefully all your hard work will pay off and she'll be all better soon :)

We've been to Cat & Rabbit today to see Simon. He had a look at Cookie's teeth and said her teeth are still fine despite not eating much. He said no misaligned teeth or jaw. But he didn't like the smell of her open wound so he properly flushed it and removed most of the gunk in it. He also removed the stitches where loads of gunk were attached. He said we should just probably wait longer for it to settle down and heal since the wound is very big and deep and she's taking Zithromax anyway so it should fix the problem eventually.

We just don't know the exact reason why she is not eating. If her teeth is fine, it's just probably because of the wound which makes her very uncomfortable (?).

I really hope she gets better soon and gets back to her normal self. 😔
 
You're so amazing for travelling so far! Glad her teeth are good, hopefully without the stitches in she'll feel a bit better and want to eat loads for you now! Get well soon Cookie xx
