Just got back from vets.... asked about septrin and he said no. He did inject hamish with baytril and something else I believe and I have to go back tomorrow for more. He says it doesn't affect their appetite so much when injected and he also gave him something to stimulate his appetite.

Not sure what to think....he does have mites but vet says thats probably down to stress and he said i did the right thing giving him the ivermectin Any thoughts ?
 
Was the other injection B12? This can kick-start their appetite,worked for one of mine.

Too late now with the Ivermectin, as it's done - I'd have thought it's better to dose him rather than let him try and fight the mites himself.

Is he eating at all?
 
I dont really know what else was in the injection actually. He said something to help stimulate his appetite. But I've to go back for more injections and Hamish squeaked so much.:0

I asked about septrin and I was firmly told NO. It kind of took me by surprise and I didn't question it.

I asked if he was in any pain but the vets seems to think not.

Just tried him with some goodies and he tucked into them like he'd not seen food for ages (which of course he hasn't really) but then he stopped after a tiny amount and no amount of persuasion is tempting him.

He is more animated.... running away from me when trying to syringe his food/water. Moving his head from side to side to avoid the syringe.

Do you think I should have just left him to fight the mites as well as his infection then ? I thought I was doing the right thing giving him the ivermectin. Surely mites on top of his infection would have been too much ?
 
No, I was saying the opposite - that he probably couldn't fight the mites by himself as he is quite weak, I think I would have dosed him too. Hard to know what's best though isn't it.

B12 does stimulate the appetite, so was probably that he got injected with. Did the vet say what might be wrong with him? Are there any rodentologists in your area?

They are saying he has a uti ..... I will ask him tomorrow what is in the injection.

The vet did say he thought I'd caught the mites early drool so thats a blessing.

I am normally quite strong in asking things from vets but today I was just sort of dumbstruck !!

But tomorrow is another day ?

Bit worried that too many injections of Baytril and whatever else is in there may be too much for Hamish. But I suppose I have to guided by the vets.
 
Just thought I'd update you all on Hamish.

Great news I think..... he has started to eat. Just a little but with perseverance he is eating a lot more than before. When we were at the vets on Saturday he weighed 866grams.... Today he weighs 884 grams. Not a lot I know but it is a weight gain..... He has been losing weight dramatically for about 2 weeks now...in fact he has done nothing except go down for 2 weeks so an upward movement in his weight is fantastic...

He seems so much happier as well. He seems much brighter. I am so pleased. Back to vets today and tomorrow for the last two of the five injections and hopefully things can only get better.

Now I have the problem of mites and I might have to treat then entire clan (all 11 of them ) ... going to ask vets advice on that one today.

Please have a look at how much better he looks .......

Fingers crossed he carries on eating and getting better. Hamish is sooo cute! ^)
