Hi everyone, I'm a little new to the forum so I'm sorry if this isn't in the correct spot but since the summer I've been having on and off problems with my guinea pig, Espi. This is going to be a long one, as she has decided to make up for almost 4 years of not getting sick in a matter of months haha. (: Please do let me know if I should post her health issues seperately or not, as she has multiple.
In July, she went to the vet for what they thought was a URI, and she also had weird poos. She was treated with baytril and her stuffy nose went away but not the poo problem. When her URI symptoms came back two months later we switched to a more experienced cavy vet and they gave baytril, and said she could have chronic rhinits and suggested a few things including switching to fleece from paper bedding to cut down on dust and it works very well for her. She was better, but the poo issue still wasn't solved.
We pushed the hay a lot more and syringed a bit of water because her poo indicated she was a little dehydrated. Since then she has had trouble getting it out, and will sometimes hunch her back or fluff up in a corner until she can pass them. Most would be tear dropped shaped, some normal sized but mostly smaller. I also found quite a few pieces strung together. I was wondering if mucus from her nose could go into the GI tract and mess with her passing stools as some of it looks coated in something. This has been going on for months now and I'm not sure what to do anymore. It kills me to see her this way and I wish I could fix it. ):
In October, she started squealing in pain a few times in a week while trying to go. It slowed down last month to where I've only heard her do this 4 times for all of November leading up to now, but again the poo is still coated in what looks like mucus. She has on and off small poos and then longer shaped poos, all with a few tear drop shaped. I'm not sure if a bacterial infection could cause this, or if it is because of her mucus-y nose.
It's now December, and this whole week her on Tuesday I noticed that her allergies have been acting up again, making it harder for her to breathe through her nose. On Tuesday, her eye looked really weird like she had cataracts or an ulcer, and her stomach felt hard and she didn't want anyone to touch it. She was still eating and drinking pretty normally, albeit a bit less than usual on her pellets. We took her Thursday to the vet and she said espi did in fact have an ulcer and gave her eye drops and have her Zyrtec for the nose congestion. The vet said her stomach may have fluid, or something enlarged like her uterus, but doesn't think it's a cyst which I hope is true.
I'm not sure what to think of this, and researching on the internet gave me multiple things that it could be if everything is connected. Has anyone had experience with these types of symptoms? I read online that the rhinits and possible fluid in stomach could be signs of a heart issue, but I wouldn't know unless she had an x-Ray or ultra-sound.
I also thought she lost weight, and the trip to the vet confirmed that. She weighed 946g the last time we weighed her in September and now she weights about 783g which is definitely too much lost. (I don't have a scale at the moment but am hoping to purchase a new one this week).
She will be going back to the vet in a week or earlier if need be. Should I ask for an x-Ray? A blood test? I'd appreciate any advice or knowledge on this and am very sorry my post is so long, Espi has been a bit of a medical-case this year. Hopefully we'll find out what's wrong soon (:

Hi! I am sorry for your problems. There is certainly a problem with either pain, but at that moment, it is difficult to say whether the problem is in the digestive tract, the reproductive organs or the urinary tract. An x-ray is advisable to see what is going on. Bloods are rather difficult to get from guinea pigs. Please have her seen asap in view of her massive weight loss.

With this amount of weight loss, you need to start syringe feeding asap (this also includings watering). You will find our step-by-step guide helpful. Please weigh your girl daily at the same time in the feeding cycle (ideally before dinner) instead of weekly, as we recommend with all healthy guinea pigs. Cheap kitchen scales from the supermarket are perfectly OK to check whether there is a weight loss or not.

I agree that an xray is the next step so that the vet can see what is going on or an ultrasound may be useful too.

Thank you for your input. (: I will ask for them to be done at her follow up appointment next week.

She has been getting syringed critical care for a week throughout the day now, but I didn't think about syringing the water, I'll start that too. I'm getting the new scale either tomorrow or Monday, it depends if it has to be shipped or not. The one I have hasn't worked right in months after my dog knocked it off the counter .

I think I'm going to get her x-rayed first, and if it doesn't show much and the vet thinks an ultrasound would be more helpful she might have to get one. I hope not though because the closest place to get one done for piggies is over an hour . I feel like an X-ray should at least give a general idea of where the problem is .

Does she ever get a 'brown mouth'? BonBon has digestive issues, and throat problems, which I 'think' when she was getting nose issues (she's been free of nose issues for 3 months now), was down to getting liquid food up there (this is where the brown mouth comes in) as she seems at times to be keeping a lot of fluid in her mouth, possibly mushed up pellets or poop soup that she's made, which then gets all over her lips, giving the appearance of drooling.
99% of the time it's under control with gripe water, which keeps inflammation in her throat, stomach, and digestive tract down meaning her soft poops have returned to normal, and she's more or less a normal piggy.
That said she had a bad episode last week, where she couldn't walk, or move for pain, but she's now back on metacam, and within a couple of hours she was fine, I've found it seems giving gripe before metacam protects (coats) the digestive system, and keeps her poops solid too. She's not on anything else.

I haven't particularly noticed her having a 'brown mouth', but I think it would be hard to see either way because her whole face is mixes of brown/dark brown (: Is it supposed to be on the outside or inside of the mouth? I have noticed a couple of times though of her getting some of her poo that she gets from her bum (when she has trouble passing them sometimes she will try to pull them out herself) she gets a little on her bottom lip depending on the consistency (I'm sorry it's very gross to describe).
I hope little BonBon is still doing well! x

An update on Espi:

Her nose is still on/off congested and icky, it seems like it gets better and then just gets bad again. Not as worse as before the Zyrtec, but I feel she might need something else to really kick it out of her system. The good news though is that she loves taking her meds! haha x

Her stomach still feels the same as before to me maybe slightly less "knotted" feeling on one side (not sure if that's the right way to describe it) and her trouble pooing is still occurring.

Her eye looked like it had healed a little bit after a few days on the eye drops, but this morning when I went to check on her it looked very alarming. Her eye looks red where it should be white and the ulcer looks Almost mangled in a way, like maybe she hit it again with something. There's a patch of green/blue on it too, where as before the only discoloring was the cloudiness. The bottom part of her eyelid keeps sticking to her eye, and only starts to move away when she gets the eye drops but not for long. She also has a bit of a head tilt and I'm so worried about her. She was supposed to go to the vet today but long story short my mom didn't book the appointment (I'm not allowed to as I'm not yet an adult) and they were fully booked. They are still booked tomorrow (Tuesday) but I'm hoping someone will cancel or she can squeeze us in if it gets worse. I am still pushing for an x ray but my mom says she doesn't need it. If anything it would show us if she has any arthritis or beginning stages of it that way we could look out for in the future.
Right now Espi is happily munching on some hay at 12am and says goodnight/morning to you all. (:
