Hey, so I got two 2/3 month old guinea pigs a week ago.

4 days ago in the evening, I heard them coughing and one of them was breathing heavily so I went to the vet the next morning.
She is not an expert on exotics (no vets here are-in fact she's the only vet around) but she used to have guineas
She heard a bit of fluid on the lungs of one of them and cough on both so she subscribed 0,6ml of Baytril for each-once a day for 5 days.

We're on the 3rd day of Baytril and the piggies are still both coughing. I think the heavy breathing has cleared and they're eating ok.(in fact the good thing is that they never really stopped eating)
1) How long could it take until the cough clears?

2) I am concerned that the most healthy looking one is not drinking much water , only a little bit if any. He does eat quite a bit of lettuce though and parsley etc.)
Do I do anything? The other one drinks A LOT.

3) The one with the heavy breathing which has cleared now still looks tired every time he stops eating and rests, his eyes get slanted and he likes to lay on the side a little bit.

4) I asked about probiotics and the vet said they don't really have to take them unless they get diahrrea which I don't think it has happened. However, I saw some stuff on youtube that frightened me (stasis and other intestinal problems) Will it do much harm to take baytril for two more days? Is there any point in feeding them probiotics on Monday, after Baytril is done?

5) I also weighted them- two days ago the most healthy one was 680 and the one with the heavy breathing was 600.
Today the healthier was 617 and the other one 675. So they sorta reversed. Where could that big change be attributed?

(Thanks for reading this wall of text )

Coughs can take a little while to clear, it is great need they are eating well.
I would give it another few days and go for a check up.

What are They being bedded on please?

I think when you said the one piggy Lies down to rest you’ll find they maybe just chilling, piggies can be quite lazy lol

Pro biotics are fine to give at any time! You can normally get them from a pet store. Are you US or UK based please?

Hi, thanks for the reply. I live in faroe islands ( very small place between Iceland, Norway and UK so my options are limited :/. The bedding is hygiene pellets from plant fibre and then hay. ( i will switch to fleece but it takes a while for stuff to be delivered here)and there is no aspen or any appropriate wood shavings bedding in the pet shop so that's my best bet.
I can still hear the little one breathing right now ( he's under a pile of hay) but not wheezing like before. I also have them on a small commercial cage -again the only one available( building a big one as we speak but it might take an extra week to be done :( )

Here are the beddig pellets. I put quite a bit of hay on top of this.

Not many piggies like baytril. I have given probiotics with it before but I have also had piggies have courses of baytril without giving probiotics without any ill effects. URI's can take a while to clear so I would book another vets appointment for the day your medication runs out to review whether to continue it for a longer period or not. It's good that you have noticed improvement though
