Well after this little lady was reserved by a member on here she fell ill within hours. She is one of the RSPCA sows.
She has diarrhea and not eating and generally looking rough and puffed up fur so 10 mins after finding her this was she was in our vets.
He was very gentle and thorough, spent time looking at her teeth but thats not the problem.
She had an appetite stimulation injecton and is on baytril twice a day for a week.
She's on her own away from her babies till she starts eating but dont worry babies are fine and being looked after by another sow, although they are more or less fully independant already.
I have her on my piggy cam so can see exactly what she is doing, she has been to her water bottle and attempted hay but thats it.

Fingers crossed for this little sow.

Hey Becky. :( This is sad to hear. How frequent is the diarrhea? My first total worry would be if she's not eating, it would be to get something down her - mashed pellets or critical care. Also make sure you give her probiotic as no doubt he baytril will upset her system too. It's probably best to syringe it down her mixed in with water, then that way you know you're getting fluids into her which is important too!

Is her abdomen tender? If the diarrohea is black and very runny it sounds similar to the mystery illness my them had...(she also had a very tender tummy)

Good luck with her, she's in good hands with you so here's hoping the little lady pulls through. I do heartly recommend getting some liquid feed down her, as even just having some fiber down her gut may help stop the diarreha.

Hers isn't black, normal colour just quite runny. I have some Supreme recovery i'm going to give her soon if I dont see her eating. What probiotic can i give her?

I am so sorry for this lovely lady; I am keeping my fingers crossed for a good and quick recovery!

What probiotic can i give her?

So sorry to read about this sow ... love her!

I am really keeping everything crossed for her after all she has been through.
Your vet should be able to give you some sachets of probiotic to help her. My vet usually prescribes these if I have a pig on antibiotics. Otherwise, Pets at Home sell a small tub for about £4.99.

Hope all goes well for her. As I am sure you already know, keep her hydrated even if by syringe. Has she eaten anything different that could have caused it?

Thanks guys :)

No she's not had anything different to normal, apart from I've found she has hardly any milk.
I tried her with the recovery stuff and she's had about half a teaspoon and ate it from the teaspoon so will try more in a bit.
She's drinking from her bottle herself though :)
I've put a baby in with her as it wouldn't stop crying for mummy and she has settled more now its there too.

She might feel better with her babies back, although you will have to supplement their feeding if she has no milk or is too ill to feed them. Otherwise, they will pester her and that will not be a good thing.

In the past I have syringe fed babies when a mum has no milk, refuses to feed them or has passed away. If you have another nursing sow, then they are usually receptive to adopting babies. I know syringe feeding is difficult but 9 times out of 10 it has worked for me.

Ask your vet for kitten or puppy milk sachets and follow the instructions. Only a suggestion though.

Very sorry to hear, i do hope it settles down quickly they can loose weight so dam quick :(
Extra fluids too might help xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx
Our thoughts are with you and the little girlie xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>xx>>>

has the vey tried giving her any calcium? I dont think it is this but it could be pre eclampsia(sp?) or calcium deficiny.

Ive had it once with a sow who had 4 babies and when babies were 3 weeks old she just went off colour, was still trying to move around though but was very weak, ruffled and seemed to find it hard to move, but she didnt have diarea(cant spell!) but she went on a cause of calcium and was ok after that, but like I say it doesnt sound like its this, but just a tought as it does affect sows with 3-4 week old babies and hits them very very quick.

Fingers crossed for this little one.

She is still hanging on but not looking so good, went in to the vets on wed at 602g came out sat morning 552g and over night dropped to 536g :(

Yes she's had calcium, infact you name it she's had it.

She seems a bit perky but not eating much and there is no poo's unless she eating them straight away.

I'm ringing vets in the morning but dont really feel i can let her suffer much more. If the vets cant get her to gain weight even after syringe feeding her every 2hrs then is their any hope? :(

:( I have nothing to suggest but just wanted to say i'm thinking of her and hoping she pulls through. Come on girly x

Bless her, I'm so sorry Becky. You did all you could and with her symptoms I'm suprised she lasted as long. What a fighter she was. So unfair. x

I am so sorry - it is always so devastating when they go downhill so quickly, and there is so little you can do. It is doubly upsetting, because of her babies!

BIG HUG
