My guinea pig, Vanilla, has a very sickly smell to her, akin to feces (her bottom is clean, so it is not actually feces). She has several heal problems, like blindness, deafness and neurological damage (she is a lethal pig). She is approximately four to five years old. She has seen a vet recently for an eye problem (she had occular discharge, causing baldness around the eyes). The vet conducted a very thorough check and said he had not seen a lethal pig live for this long before. He checked for cancer and said she did not appear to have any. She possibly has arthritis, but it is hard to tell because she walks funny due to the neurological issues. Well, tonight I noticed a very foul smell coming from her cage. I checked the cage and found no noticeable feces problem. I picked her up and noticed that the smell was emanating from her body. The first thing I thought of was that she possibly was dying. Has anyone else experienced their guinea pig emitting a foul odour before passing? Her vet office is closed, but the vet did say to keep her comfortable and bring her in tomorrow if she is still like this. She is also more lethargic than normal. Please advise, as I am so worried for her! Thank you in advance for your help.

As she has had an eye problem it may be down to this and the infection is giving off the smell, or the medication, which can also have an affect.

Fingers crossed it is just as a result of the meds coming out in her skin and she will be fine.

Please let us know how you get on at the vets.

Well, just got back from the vet's office. Vanilla has blood in the urine, so there is the possibility that she has a bladder infection. Either that or she has "female" problems. She has to undergo a course of antibiotics and we will reassess her health in approximately 10 days. She is still quite stinky and she won't eat her pellets. However, she is eating her timothy hay and fresh veggies. Sure hope the meds do the trick! I'll keep you informed.
