Midge went to the vets yesterday, her back end (near and underneath) her bum was looking a bit red and inflammed. He wasnt too sure as to what it could be -it looked liked urine scald but wasn't quite in the right place for that but while she was there she decided to wee all over the table so he checked her urine for blood. There was an amount of blood to indicate an infection so her gave her an injection of terrymycin and I think dexacort. Since coming home she's been a bit quiet and subdued although in the 24 hrs since the injection the sore area has improved considerably. I'm just wondering if any of the medication is known to have side effects although we have had one of our other piggies treated with both medicines before with no side effects. Thanks for any information.

I don't know, but it could be a side effect of the infection too, sometimes it just makes animals a bit subdued if they have an infection. Hope she's ok :)

Took Midge back to the vets today for a check-up. every-thing looks and feels fine but the vet gave her another injection just to be certain all the infection is killed off. Midge is again quiet and subdued although she did make the effort for some coriander. does anybody know if the effects are more likely to be the steroid that the antibiotic although if she ever needs any more antibiotics/ steroids I will mention this to the vet. Thanks

aww bless her, glad she is clearing up and I hope she continues to make this improvement

I've just noticed the red patch has reappeared, Midge is behaving as she should- eating pooping etc. Shes not complaining when she passes urine or pooping. I have applied drapolene creme as a barrier to protect against the wee but also wondering if it could be something else - maybe fungal. I was tempted to apply canesten cream to the area until I could get to the vets (i have the 2% cream) to see if it soothed the area but never having dealt with this before with my girls some advise is needed. thank-you.

Please stay away from the canestan for a few days...it can cause more harm than good as it can be very harsh. I have first hand experience of applying it...and it subsequently caused a shedload of problems for "stinky willy" Bandit....5 months (and humungous vets billls) later which showed "no fungal infection" , we are now finally on "last resort" myconazole antifungal which seems to be working.....slowly.

Better for you to use a neutral barrier cream like E45, benpathen..something not so harsh...or like what you are using already.

She will be subdued because of the trip to the vets and injection...give her 24-48 hours to forget her experience...and give it a few days before you decide to introduce new/different treatments...

If you have any concerns and want to discuss how you next tackle the vet...please Pm me for my phone number

ATM it sounds like it's going the right way......you are right to wrorry about bald patches... so if it gets any worse over the next 48n hours them come back...

Thanks for the advice, I applied the drapolene last night as she was going to bed, this morning her bum looked almost normal we reapplied it and this evening it looks like there was nothing ever wrong with it. I will continue with the drapolene for the next 3 days (that will be 5 days in total) and then leave it off to see what happens. Obviously if anything untoward happens in the next few days straight back to the vets with Midge.
