Ugh. When I first got Tommy, his nails were rather long. Today I noticed that he was starting to resemble a bird of prey rolleyes and so I gave him a carrot to chew on and went to work on his nails. I think I cut a full cm off :o, but he's so pale that I could clearly see where the blood vessels were and where not to cut. During this whole time he was squeaking like mad, even though I could tell that I hadn't hurt him.

Now he's looking at me like I'm the Big Bad Wolf. {:| Has this happened to anyone?

Yup, pretty much all of my pigs put me on a guilt triprolleyes

Logan has to be my worst pig for cutting nails though, no one will help me as they arent confident to hold him/cut his nails so I have to do it alone, easier said than done:x

I did them tonight, I am covered in scratches and covered in bite marks and plasters, he will not sit still. I have held him every day since birth I really cant understand his outbursts when I am clipping his nails:{

It`s a necessary evil isn`t it. I find that if I trim just a teeny bit really quickly every week or two they barely notice as I`m doing their back nails. The fronts are another story altogether though. I have to get the OH or my daughter to distract , otherwise they scream and wiggle far too much.

Just know that you are doing best by them, and they can`t hate you too too long before they`ll want a cuddle!

SIGH .......... yeah :{
Onyx isn't too bad, where as Velvet :x miss wriggle butt! doing her fingernails is horrendous.....with all her looong hair and the fact that she seems to shrink them as you go to grab them :(|)

HUGS for you love XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Sweets loves any and all attention. Fez on the other hand... thinks he's going to get murdered every time anyone even looks at him but he's getting better lol. I'm sure Tommy will calm down with time :)

I've found that if you stroke their feet when you hold them it sometimes makes nail clipping times a little easier.

Not much, but it gets them used to having their feet touched.

But catch them on an off day and they scream bloody murder! I've still to cut Alan & Clives nails - thankfully their still not big enough :))

mine are getting better at not screaming at me, and they mostly think I am that horrible huge human that pesters them anyway :)) although they dont mind me moving them to the run and they have decided they actually like cuddles (but not for long)

My piggies aren't too bad having their nails cut, my one really placid Aby who kisses my nose is the worst though - he nips :(
My other two boars just sulk for a time, same after baths, they scuttle off when I approach them but am forgiven after a day or two :)
Yep, I feel like the big bad wolf too :... :))

I always have the clippers handy at cuddling time; the more often you do it, the more the piggies get used to it. For some reason, my dominant boars are te biggest cry babies when it comes to cutting nails and boar hygiene! mallethead

I used to have a guinea pig that would stuff her feet in her mouth and bite her nails off whenever you went to cut them one of my new pigs puts his feet in his mouth whenever you hold him up so I can see him doing the same.

They're still only babies so I don't have to cut them just yet but I'm getting them into the habit of being fussed and swaddling them, but I can see it being a battle.

All the guinea pigs I've ever had have always had a big sulk on after nail clipping, bathtime, impaction clearing etc - I don't expect any gratitude - lol! Think I'd faint! :))

Treacle and cookie are in a massive sulk at the mo cuz we've just done them. The way they behave you'd think we were cutting thier feet off not just trimming the nail.

Hats off to everyone who does this on thier own - for us its definetly a two person job. We've been cheating with our old girl Putt, her nails are that thick and as we are going for treatment every two weeks at vets we've got the vet to do them for us for the last 6 months!

we have no issues with ours, never have had, we just wrap them (mummify) in a towel with them snuggly in the center, and pull out 1 leg at a time. works a treat, no scratches, no bites, they do wiggle if it isnt tight enough but its still easy to do. i roll them up in a towel, lay them upside down on my lap and do them single handed, easy :) now we dont even get squeeked at, and forgiven almost instantly as they like snuggling in towels or blankets anyway :))

I tried what you suggested since I didn't finish the first time William & Keith...he seemed to respond to that better. :) Thanks!

Tommy seemed to calm down a bit when he figured out it didn't hurt. rolleyes I made it up to him with more veggies. I'm forgiven! :))

Nails have got to be one of the worst things about owning piggies. No matter how hard I try I just can't seem to hold them and do it properly. I always get help from my Mum but its still a nightmare. Last time my Phoebe Pig pulled away and she was bleeding for awhile :( so had to get them done by someone else.

I think it's definitely a common thing for piggies to sulk and get angry at us slaves especially when they get their nails cut! I am one of the lucky ones as my girls really don't mind it too much :)

Oh yes how this sounds familiar! My girls hate it so much! Amelia Jane will bite me non stop. Peronel cries and makes so much noise. Sophie bites. Amina wriggles and cries and so does Marble. After they seem so upset and I cuddle them. Each month I just snip the tips off and it is not so bad.

Yep the bigger the boar the bigger the cry baby! Both of my rex's have been been big boys but hate this, fuzzy squeaks and nips and one of my previous piggies, Dibs, would pull his paw away at the last second and try and tuck it in his fur! rolleyes

Everytime you mention 'the boar' I just imagine this gigantic Guinea Pig. I reckon he's that big he could put you on his leg and trim your nails. Am I correct?!? We would like to see a pigture of Fuzzy (guineazilla) ASAP please!

Rogue hated it so much that whenever I picked her up she used to snuggle vertically so that no feet were on show! Storm was a real wriggler.

Misty is ok for me to hold - but OH always does the cutting and she bites him non stop! If he is lucky she bites his wedding ring which she is fascinated with! Sometimes I can distract her with veggies instead. It is ok for me, but poor OH!

However, she doesn't sulk at end, as long as you give her treats! I do hate piggie nail cutting!
