So a while back some of you may have seen that I posted a thread about Dottie and Mabel having mites...which seemed to actually be getting worse despite them being treated with xeno. http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=70248&highlight=dottie+mabel+have+mites http://www.theguineapigforum.co.uk/showthread.php?t=70862

Well, i've been emailing Chrissie from gorgeous guineas because i've got some of the Manuka and Neem shampoo and coconeem melt to try and help and she very luckily pointed out that firstly the girls are receiving xeno 50 which is incorrect because they weigh over 800g, and secondly I was told to give them 6 drops when I should be using the whole pipette! Blimming vet has got it totally wrong malletheadpow-pow! So now the mites have had an extra two weeks to infest my girls further and i've wasted my money on something that would never have helped! grrrr Honestly, this is basic care and she got it wrong! I'll be letting her know her mistake and making sure i get the xeno 450 and use a whole pipette this time. Huge thank you to Chrissie for helping me out, she is brilliant if anyone ever has any questions re skin care/sore feet etc for piggies. Ok, rant over! :))

Sad that they weren't being treated correctly the first time, wasn't your fault you know. Thank you for posting the story; I will mentally file that away for future use if I should ever encounter mites and remember to double check the directions, that the vet might just be wrong

Thanks Pat, it is another lesson learnt for me for the next time! Thought i'd make others aware of it too!

Grrrrrrr blinkin' vets! pow-pow mallethead

I'm so sorry to hear that Dottie and Mabel still have mites and the treatment didnt work due to the vet not checking!mallethead Good job Chrissie pointed that out to you, you must be relived now you know your on the right track to get rid of them :)

*BIG HUGS to Dottie and Mabel*

Hope they're mites clear up soon, give them both chin tickles from me and the boys xxxxxxx
^)
Oh and let us know how the chat with the vet goes!

Last time I got Xeno from the vets I noticed, after I had used them, that they were over a year out of date mallethead

When I mentioned it to the vet on the next visit she didnt even apologise but when she went to give me and charge me for the next lot I refused telling her I had bought 'in date' ones online cheaper. Never went back to that vet .... lol

So another thing worth checking.... rolleyes

Oh I did also contact the manufacturers to see if they could harm my piggies or just not work and they couldnt say either way.....

Hope Dottie and Mabel get better soon :)

x

Unfortunately it's a common story with vets isn't it? At least she diagnosed the mites correctly - many are not even capable of that!

Chrissie is very helpful (she's helped me a lot in the past), as is the rest of the GP community :) We're lucky that we have places such as these to come for advise as well as unfortunately most vets still have no clue how to treat piggies.

I would definitely pass on the feedback to you vet though. If she is a good vet she will learn from her mistake and take the advice on board - it’s all you can ask for really. The sad truth is that GP care is a small part of a vets training when compared to other domestic animals...

Those vets that are GP savvy tend to have learnt from owners...
Unfortunately I have come across so many arrogant vets who just can't possibly accept that sometimes we just know better!

Hope your girls are on the mend soon.

Thanks Laura! I am relieved to know that hopefully things will get better from now...i felt like i was doing something wrong or it wasn't mites so I was getting a bit confused! Sure they will be better in no time now, although i'm not sure what they are going to think of all these baths they'll be getting :))!

What?! She sold you out of date xeno?! Honestly! I want to feel confident that when i go to the vets they are doing the best they can for my piggies, right now i don't feel that way!

Thanks Laure, we are very lucky indeed that we have places like this to learn from. Last time i went to the vets i told her about guinealynx so hopefully she will explore it and maybe learn some more? I've noticed that you're in London too, have you found a good cavy savy vet here? I'm struggling...

Well I actually have found 2 very very good vets over the year but unfortunately both are a fair way away from central London but very much worth the effort.

The first one is Anne O'Meara at Goddard
150 Kingston Road
Ewell
Surrey
KT17 2ET

She is brilliant with pigs and actually used to be Peter Gurney's vets. Unfortunately I think she only works 1 or 2 days a week these days so I haven't been there in a while.

The other great vet which I can recommend and currently go to is Jenny Towers at
Tilehurst Veterinary Centre
19 School Road,
Tilehurst,
Berkshire
RG31 5AR

Jenny is the vet that both Chrissie at Gorgeous guinea and Karen at Reading Guinea pig rescue use I believe and she is very very good with pigs.

Unfortunately both of these are about 1.5 hours away from central London by public transport (i do not have a car). but so far i have not been able to find a vet that I would trust in central London and for me it is worth the travel...

I do see a local vet for my cat and in the past they have been happy to issue meds with a faxed prescription & explanation from Jenny but that is the extent of the trust I would put in them when it comes to piggies....

whereabouts in London are you?

Thanks Laure, I will jot those addresses down.
i'm in Archway (north London). If you know you can trust a vet it is definitely worth the travel!

Ha! I live just off of Holloway road so very near you indeed. Small world! :)

No waaaaay! How funny! :)) Uh oh, you better watch out i'm very close to come with my pig napping jacket, your pigs are so cute! :))

Silly vet! Some vets have not had the proper experience in guinea pigs. It's just dogs this and cats that. Make sure you find a good small animal vet that knows loads about guinea pigs. I am sorry to hear you pigs have mites. Mine had Mange. What have your's got? I treated mine with revolution. Get some. It's worth it!

You;re both pretty near the Royal Vet college in London so can register for consultations/clinics via their Beaumont Sainsbury Animal Hospital

Thanks Pebble!

Do you have or knows of someone who has experience going there with pigs? Unfortunately I have had too many bad experiences with vets. It's not a reflection on the vets themselves it is just that they do not get to see enough pigs to really gain experience.

I know I travel far at the moment but at the end of the day I trust my vet 100% when it comes to pigs.

sorry for high jacking the tread

No problem! As i said before i am desperate to find a cavy savy vet here. It seems ludicrous really it being a big city that there isn't one!

No personal experience nor heard from anyone else - however if I lived in Central London this is where I would start as it IS the Vet College so has access to a wide range of knowledge and techniques.

Others in London include Midland Vets in Leyton and CJ Hall in East Sheen, both of whom I have heard good report of with piggies.
