Single guinea pig after loss of guinea pig - what to do now

Hiya,

Not sure if this is the right place to ask - we have just sadly lost one of our guinea pigs, was very sudden. We have a single female guinea pig about 4.5 years old - I don't think she is going to cope as a sinlge guinea pig but not in a position to take on another. We are in Aberdeen (NE scotland), does anyone know of any places that would be able to help find her a new home and friend?

I am sorry to hear you lost one of your girls.
Giving up a piggie is really hard and I am sorry to hear you are in this position.

I also live in Aberdeen and unfortunately rescues are far and few between.
In banchory there is an SPCA, but I am not sure if they take on animals, you could always ask.

The Ayr rescue is likely a good one but it is very far away.
There is a rescue in Dundee, called Cavy Capers, who are amazing and do a bunch of great work for piggies and rabbits, but I do understand it’s a bit of a drive away.
You can find them on facebook, I am sure they would be able to find your girl a new friend and a loving home, and although I wasn’t able to get a piggy from there, their response and love for these animals is amazing.

You can give her to a pets at home, I find the one in Inverurie has the best general care for their animals, but they won’t regulate where your girl is going. So there is always the potential she could be sold on a single girl or given to the ‘wrong’ people.

Perfect, thank you both. I am happy to travel (although Ayr is a bit far - I would travel if needs be) to make sure she is given the right home. I spoke to pets at home at the beach (we took him down to the vets but he sadly passed away in the car, we took him in anyway and they confirmed he had passed away) and they said the same that they would rehome as a single guinea pig but I really don't think she is going to cope as a single otherwise we would keep her. We got them both as a bonded pair (the male was neutered) as a rescue, they were never keen on being handled - we tried to get them used to it but they never did so we were happy to let them live their life with minimal human touch and both seemed happy. Now I don't feel our girl will cope with just human contact because she is about 4.5 yrs and not used to it (and doesn't seem to enjoy it). I am in no rush to rehome her but I need to do what's best for her. I will look up the Dundee centre, thank you.
 
You could look into rescuing a similar aged pig to go with your girl if you wanted.
Unless you are not looking to own piggies anymore.

If you go with Cavy Capers, I am sure you can ask them to let the person know she isn't really keen on being handled. They are a great bunch of people and I am sure they would be more than happy to pass on the message.
 
Thank you, I have contacted cavy capers and it sounds like they have space to take her in. Thanks for your help.

So sad, we let her say goodbye to her best pal and she snuggled up with him. I hope she doesn't feel too sad. I take comfort in knowing we gave them the best life possible xx
