There's a small local pet shop 5 mins from me, I went in for piggie chews 9 days ago and they had a single piggie then group of 5. I went again today and the 5 have gone but the 1 is still alone. I'm so tempted to get the poor thing, what do you think? I know I shouldn't support the whole thing, but the poor thing is lone.

Thats a hard one. 3 of my piggies are pet shop bought, however they had all been in the pet shop for months and were about to be given back to the breeder. I think of them as rescues in this sense as goodness knows what would have happened to them if they had went back to the breeder. I stopped going to that particular pet shop as I couldnt keep buying all the orphans. My most recent piggy was adopted through a rescue. Good luck with your decision.

If you are asking for independent "approval" to go and buy the lonesome pig then why not?

It is a personal choice! If I had the room & a piggie to bond it with, I probably would get the piggie!

I think this is a situation that only you can decide on. It's easy to say "aww go get it" when you're not the person who'd actually be giving the pig a home. I think you should do it but only if you know that this wouldn't happen every time you went past a lone pig in a pet shop (it has to happen to one of them, don't forget). I think in all fairness you should also buy it if you actually want another guinea pig, not because it's alone. Consider your other pigs/the extra cost/bonding etc. and whether or not you'd find it hard to turn down another pig if you saw it in the same situation.

Hi why not get it .I know it is from a pet shop, but if you think it would settle in with your guinea pigs. why not give it a home were it is going to be well looked after and loved. Teresa

Its so hard to make these decisions. My pigs are pet shop bought but i didnt know what i know now. Its what you think is best.

To be honest, how on earth are the pigs in pet stores to find homes if no one buys them :[ I just got my 2 from there, and the other 2 from an auction (which I do not support)

I honestly don't see anything wrong with buying from well knowledged pet stores, if the pigs are in good shape and well taken care of, then get them!

It was probably better that she was alone instead in with those 5, in all honesty. I am not saying that any pig should be isolated but think about it. At least one of the 5 was probably a boar and a good chance one of the other 4 (if other 4 were sows) could be pregnant.

Every one of my pigs are pet shop pigs. But first of all there are no guinea pig rescues in Kentucky...I've checked. Pola was my first and she was all by herself, but I had already gone in knowing I was going to get a pig. Got Nell as a companion for a lonely Pola. My others were "rescues" from the same pet store because Lila had two very young babies (Shotzie and Poppy) and Molly was very pregnant.

It's a personal choice, as Gracie said, if you want the piggy and you have the space, and ability to care for her then go for it! But if not, don't be too hard on yourself. ;)

i got my Basil because he was a single depressed petshop piggy, although i now realise it was a bad choice as i went in the next day and the tank he was in was full of more piggies again,so i really only made room for them to fill it with more piggies, needless to say more piggies will probably suffer bad conditions and care due to too many of us being soft hearted x
It is personal choice but don't be surprised if there is one in the exact same situation next week, unfortunantly we can save them all x

I've kind of made it a personal policy to stay away from the pet store that I got all my piggies from...though I love them all, I just don't have room for any more. I get supplies from the ones in the big city or online.

No Guinea pig rescue's in Kentucky?
I know EARPS, for one, will do "piggie trains" to get a pig to a loving home.

When I checked Guinea Lynx, I just looked at the state abbreviations, didn't see that Indiana/Kentucky :red...seeing as I don't ever go to Indiana. Hmmm...probably would have done that, but too late now :(, thanks for pointing that out, will contact them if I ever decide to get another pig, for sure.

It really is up to you. I bought Rolo from a pet shop as she was living in camped conditions and had been in a fight or two before she was left in the cage alone. She pulled on my heart strings and I took her but she was swiftly replaced with 5 more piggies. As has been said, cant save them all as much as we would love to :)

what about talking to the managers, like you said they may give him back to the breeder why not say you will have him insteaad but offer a donation or something?
thats what p@h do if they cant sell the last 1 or 2 piggies to make room for new 'batches' they put them up for adoption.
oh i have to say when i went in today i saw a little boy ginger with sticky up hair and such yummy eyes! i did have a hard job pulling myself away!

With any pig you don't know where they have come from! Touch wood my 3 pet shop boys haven't had any problems with their health but I have lost ones that have come to me from other people via breeders or rescues. Now rescues that pass away young it can't be helped as we don't know the history.

In my opinion, if you've the cash, space, love, won't house the animal alone then why not? My pet shop sometimes has rabbits, she gets given litters now and again I have to walk in with my eyes closed! haha

Good luck deciding. :)

Weve just bought two pigs from a pet shop (Pets at Home) who are now incredibly ill and staying with a vet at the moment

Personally I wouldnt get the lone pig. Pobably seems hypocritical now, but I feel weve learned a lesson in these weeks. If you buy from a place you dont know where the pigs have come from and theyve lived in a stressful envirnoment, dont expect perfectly healthy pigs every time:(

Plus, theyll probably have more lone pigs int he future. You cant buy them all

Its totally up to you though, good luck whatever you decide

It is the luck of the draw Mojo. :)

Sunshine came from a small pet shop and is perfectly healthy, Twinkle from p@h no problems either but Cuzzy was riddled with complaints and sadly we lost him after 3 months. My daughter who was 6 at the time was heartbroken so we went back to p@h as we had a 3 weeks old baby boar called Eccles who needed a pal quickish and I didn't want to wait. I asked if there were any in the adoption section and there was Pudsey Emily fell in love with him and he has been fine too.

Twinks is slightly unhinged so I wonder did anything happen to him before we got him. He trusts me but dislikes men. I would always go to rescues now or take in any that needed rescuing and with this credit crunch that is sadly more often than not. :)

it really is.
Cupcake died about a month after I got her, she had to be put to sleep as the vet said her stomach was full of tumours. She didn't move much, hardly ate and was in gradually more and more pain when handled. I was devastated.
P@H gave me a refund and I bought Ruby, who has had no health problems whatsoever. It's the luck of the draw but, from experience, I'd say it's better to rescue a pig. The chances of them having health problems causes so much heartbreak, and at the end of the day you're paying for them to breed pigs like this. You can't just say "oh it's only one pig it won't make a difference" because I'm pretty sure that's what most people say. Every pig you buy off them, you're paying for another to be bred with no end of possible health issues.

If this will be one of those situations where you regret not doing anything forever, go get him. Some of my pigs were from pet shops - wherever a pig comes from, he or she is amazing and lovely :)

I haven't been able to get online OR get back to the shop. If in the morning when I go the piggy is still there, I'll get him/her.:rose

Hope the piggy is still there. This is how I got my Mimsi & Montgomery. They had both been in the pet shop for months and I bought them before they went back to the breeder. You will give this piggy a fab life and that is all that matters. Good luck.

If it's still there, than I look at it as it was meant to be. ;)
