Nelson (one of my guinea pigs) sits in his own poo and he has a lump on his bum and the vet said it is because it's itchy I need a way of getting the poo off with out hurting Nelson any ideas?

I'm not experienced enough to answer this but, while we are waiting for a health an illness guru to answer this - can you give a bit more info...

How old is Nelson?

Is he neutered?

Is his poo formed - or is it a bit soft ?

Has your vet prescribed anything?

You say - he has a lump on his bum - do you mean the area where his poo comes out?

Has your vet examined him for faecal impaction?

Be great if you can supply a little more info as requested above, we shall try and give you some ideas.

Any chance of a photo of the lump?

do you mean he sits in it because he doesn't move very much, or because he is impacted &its all stuck in his opening collecting debris?

If he just sits in it you can bathe his bum in tepid water &it should come away from his hair reasonably easily.

If he isn't moving much it could be due to pain or injury issues &its uncomfortable for him to move. If this is the case he'll need a vet visit to find the cause &probably some form of painkiller (metacam).

If he's of a more mature age it could be impaction where the soft stools clog up the opening &form a solid mass of poo that will get stuck &will need teasing out gently with warm water &TLC.

This is normally a rather smelly process I believe but well worth it when cleared.
I've never had boys but I think they need regular checking of their bits for debris-hay -bedding-sperm rods &poops etc.

There is a link on here somewhere. I'm on my mobile so it doesn't post links easily but I'll have a look.
Xx

Nelson is 4 he isn't neutered it is abit soft no my vet hasn't prescribed any thing no and his lump is to the side

A bum wash will soften and remove the poo. I'm a bit confused about the diagnosis by the vet saying that the lump is caused by it being itchy,I would be tempted try a different vet.

I agree that a second opinion is a good idea. Have you checked our vet locator?

That was about 2 months ago that I last took him to the vets so I will properly take him again soon
